Lets try to be positive, though.

The Game
Se7en
Fight Club
Zodiac

Well, I'll give you Seven and Fight Club unreservedly.
I enjoyed The Game, though it's more an exercise in cinematography than direction.  And I'm ok with that, I love good cinematography, but I'm not sure how much of that is Fincher's .

A three hour genre movie full of actors I don't like about a serial killer who was never caught, all from a guy who used to direct music videos? Where do I sign up?

[rant] I really hate the term "genre movie." What the hell does it mean, anyway? Every movie belongs to at least one genre, so how come scifi/fantasy/horror movies get lumped together as "genre"? Plus, I don't think Zodiac really qualifies as a "genre movie," anyway, does it? [/rant]

It definitely is, police procedural is an established and very specific genre. That said, I was using the term somewhat ironically, since it tends to be a term of sneering dismissal people use to describe anything that comes out in what used to be consistently b-movie genres, which as you say means sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, along with western, thriller, and a few others. 'Romantic comedy', on the other hand, doesn't count as a genre, even though it's twice as repetitive as most of the others.

Honestly, I generally use it as a positive term, since 'genre movie' in filmic terms means there are a series of unsaid rules that are laid out before hand and I get to watch either the craftsmanship of putting them together beautifully, the cleverness of subverting them, or the amusing stupidity of screwing them up.

You make a good point. My problem with the term "genre" is that its so often used as a negative modifier, or at least with negative connotations, to the point where films of certain genres need to meet higher standards or greater prominence for the general moviegoing public to take them seriously. The people who say "I like Star Wars, but not scifi," or "I liked the Lord Of The Rings, but I wouldn't go see any other fantasy movie." I always wished Blockbuster would just put all their movies alphabetically. It's like movie racism.

Jodie Foster doesn't have cleavage.

She does in Panic Room because she was pregnant during filming. I'm not sure why I know that...

I rather Enjoyed the movie. saw it on Saturday at the behest of my old manager at our Casino theater, and I was still caught up in the movie at the end. Its a good make of the book, and knowing how Fincher works, I'd expect the film to at least get another hour or two worth of deleted scenes in a DVD later, seeing how much of the books were left out or barely mentioned. I agree, that R.D.jr does a great job as avery, showing the decline from collected to arrogant to downtrodden and depressed. I missed seeing "The Number 23" for this one, and after seeing Zodiac, I'm pretty damned glad I did.
