Abrams didn't direct Cloverfield and it showed. He's never directed a bad movie, so I think he can pull it off.

It doesn't matter who directed it. All of the interesting stuff was used in the viral marketing and that left us with a boring movie. Cloverfield is an obvious example of viral marketing gone terribly wrong.
Shouldn't that be, a movie with an interesting premis gone horribly wrong, but with some creative marketing department?

That's more accurate...but I wouldn't say "horribly wrong," just not nearly as awesome as the teaser made it out to be.

In all fairness, it's hardly the fault of the movie that its marketing was better than it was.

As for Abrams never directing a bad movie... well, I wouldn't call Mission Impossible III bad, but it certainly wasn't very good.

It's definitely his weakest, but I still thought it was good...less convoluted than the first 2.

Saw this today. It was absolutely outstanding. I honestly don't remember the last time a movie made me tear up, yell "OH FUCK!" when startled, or cheer in the theater (together or individually). This is by far the best movie I have seen so far this summer. All the characters were very human and believable, well acted and fleshed out, which is, truthfully, not something you see a lot in summer movies. I highly reccommend seeing Super 8.
