So here's the thing... when I was a really little kid (around 1989, 1990ish), my mom had taped a Disney Christmas sing a long special. It put in random disney movie scenes into Christmas carols as best as they could (Silent Night had the Sleeping Beauty fairies putting everyone to sleep, etc). Apparently Disney bought the rights to the "messed up" Rudolph cartoon, because that's the footage they used for the Rudolph song. There was no audio from the original, thank goodness, but it did include Rudolph's anthropomorphic mother.

I hadn't thought about that special for a long time, so when I realized what I was watching when I went to the Rifftrax event, it blew my mind. Please tell me someone else remembers that Disney special.
Just Plain Something: You read it, you can't UNread it.

GASP! I had that same special and the same reaction as you did!  :o

I do remember having that type as well. It's no surprise to see Disney use footage from the "messed up" Rudolph for that sing-along song since:

1. The short is in the public domain.

2. Around that time, Kit Parker Films gave Disney the rights to release some Max Fleischer shorts on video and air them on the Disney Channel.

I suspect I saw that Disney special, because I kept thinking I was almost certain I had seen some parts of the Rudolph cartoon while watching it at the live event.  And then the short would move along to a different scene, and I'd be just as certain I had never seen that scene.  On the other hand, I would have been much older than you in 1989, so maybe I just saw it while flipping through channels.

I definitely remember seeing the short on one of those 6 Hours of (Public Domain) Cartoons tapes.  Y'know, the ones with Betty Boop, Popeye, Superman, Three Stooges toons (every once in awhile, a Bugs Bunny short).  It also might've been on Disney's Sing-Along Songs (I had all of them, too; ...what!?), namely the Christmas one:

But I'm not 100% sure since I haven't seen it in forever.

On the other hand as part of a public domain cartoon, there's lots of places you could have seen it used.

You realize that the animation of "sugarplums dancing through their heads" from the "Night Before Christmas" short was used in the video for Weird Al's "Christmas at Ground Zero".....

These things can pop up places and then end up in your head as "I've seen that somewhere before..."
