QuoteJapanese animation has lost one of its giants. Satoshi Kon, director of Paprika and creator of Paranoia Agent, has apparently died at age 47. Gainax employee Takeda Yasuhiro tweeted the news a short time ago, and it was confirmed by Madhouse's Masao Maruyama via the Otakon committee.

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

For those who don't know, this guy was the director of Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, the Paranoia Agent tv series, and Paprika.

Kon seemed unique in Anime circles, in that he managed to make movies for adults that you wouldn't be ashamed to show other people.  RIP.

Someone on Twitter put it best: He didn't die, he just went to the moon.

Okay... this makes me mad.  People praise Miyazaki (and I like his stuff for the most part), but Kon has got to be my favorite.  "Surreal yet deeply human" is a description that I would give to very few people.  And Kon was working on a level worthy of Dali.  The main reason I'm mad is that I was looking forward to a very full filmography, but I guess not anymore.  Very much like my namesake, Stanley Kubrick, he offered very few films but, man, what films they were.

Apparently it was pancreatic cancer. The bittersweet news: His final film (if I garnered right from the article) will be completed by Madhouse Studios.

This still sucks, though.

I just wanted to chime and say how much this sucks. I've only seen two of his films so far, Paprika and Perfect Blue, the latter being my favorite of the two, and it's just amazing how he put together these films on the screen. Perfect Blue is one of the best thrillers that I can remember seeing in a long time.

RIP.

I've only seen one film by him, Paprika. I'm sad to hear this, and glad there's some other films by him I can see.
