I haven't seen Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

I think you can cross it off if you've seen the version with Ashton Kutcher.

Oh yeah.....Kutcher is the Sidney Poitier of this generation.   ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

;)

See the original.  If for no other reason as a kind of snapshot of the era and the attitudes.  Could make you appreciate how far we've come in some ways (but not in others).

And don't think about Tracy's health as you watch it.  Or appreciate the performance knowing how ill he was, I guess.  I do get Basehart's point - it's like I hate knowing how out of it Graham Chapman was during the filming of Holy Grail but every time you turn around the surviving members are talking about it.

THE QUEEN!!!

I for one think Guess Who's Coming to Dinner shows off how incredible Katharine Hepburn is, as well as Sidney, and I quite like it.

Doesn't every movie she stars in do that? :)

Patton........check
Butch Cassidy..........check

I had seen most of Butch and Sundance before (all the stuff in America, and the final scene), but I hadn't realized before that Sam Elliot was the guy playing poker with Sundance at the beginning.

This weekend I watched The Graduate, The African Queen, and the first disc of Schindler's List.

Well that's true. Then let's just say it shows she still had it at that age. But so does On Golden Pond. So never mind. She's just really good in it.

I just watched Chinatown and Easy Rider one after the other.....I'm depressed now.

Gotta mix 'em up, Dude.   ;)

Although I'll admit that I've never seen Easy Rider some how.  But when you add it up - hippies on the road in the mid-Sixties...AND heading south.  That rarely if ever ended up good.

I'm off to watch Birth of a Nation.  That will cheer me up, right?

Thought you could only see that at the Library of Congress if you could prove you're doing it or academic reasons because of the racism?  Maybe that's just the uncut version....

I'm a little baffled by it.  I can't imagine it being a good movie, but critics seem to love it.  It's available to stream on Netflix, and since it's public domain, it's available on youtube.

Why?  Because it's a silent film?   :grr:

Or because it has a racist perspective?  Much as we hate to admit it, there are some talented yet racist people out there (back to talking about Mel Gibson again....).

Because it's racist (or sympathetic to racism), not because it's silent.

Good.....because one of the best movies ever made was silent.

As far as Birth of a Nation goes....I haven't see it all but as I understand it parts of the film are objectionable.  It's when it gets to the post Civil War part that it shows Blacks in a negative light (things like one gets elected to Congress, shows up, takes his shoes off and puts his feet up on his desk at the Captial) and other scenes make the KKK look heroic.  The rest is an impressive telling of the history of America.  Doesn't forgive the bad parts but...
