My attempt at a video review series

Moleman

I CAN NOT believe I'm actually going to share this but I guess I'm feeling exceptionally ballsy right now.

Way back in like April after I had discovered the Nostalgia Critic and www.thatguywiththeglasses.com I got obsessed with all the videos there and watched damn near every video on the site by everybody.  So after seeing all these I got this crazy idea to attempt my own video review series.  The following is something I through together in a single day and I guess it really isn't that bad.  There's this annoying pop after the shoe throw and I say "anyway" a few times but other then that it turned out like I envisioned it.  Well at the very least you get to find out why my screen name is Moleman and what I look like (as if anyone was REALLY wondering).

If you need me I'll be huddled in the corner with a bag over my head.

Wow Really?  I guess I'm just being incredibly self-conscious.

Doing a Bad Comedy series though won't work because it would still be way too much like the Nostalgia Critic.  Yesterday I came up with the idea of instead doing a series called "Nerd in Training" or "Geek in training" (to make it sound less like AVGN).  The premise would be that I never played too many video games or saw that many movies as a kid and I would be taking a look at some of the "must play" games and "must see" movies that any "nerdy" gamer or movie watcher should know.  I may just stick with games though, I haven't decided.  The games I'm referring to are ones that growing up not everybody may have played or even known about but are now considered classics.  One I have in mind is Chrono Trigger for the SNES.  I've never played that one and even though I owned an SNES growing up I didn't even know this game existed until a couple years ago.  I basically just had the Mario games, Star Fox, Zelda and maybe one or two others.  So the idea would be I would be playing the game for the first time and commenting on the game from an outsider perspective.  Maybe I'd be able to point out things that no one else may have thought of.  I know the game involved time travel and its a turn-based RPG with feminine looking male characters with crazy hair so maybe I can play through that game and come up with something entertaining out of it.

I think this is a good idea because i've heard a lot of reviewers talk about how what they do fits their personality and this sort of fits my personality as well.  I liked video games and movies as a kid, but I really didn't see a lot or pay attention to what was popular or well-liked much.  Since I've been in college though (I'm a senior now), I've been slowly discovering stuff I didn't know about because I didn't have the Internet, Nintendo Power, or any nerdy friends growing up.  I love all the people that do video series but its EXTREMELY rare I've even heard about what they're talking about.  And I'm not even talking about what they review because those are the bad and obscure games and movies not everyone has heard of.  I'm talking about stuff they reference and what's included on "best of" or "top 10" lists.  I really don't know a lot of this.  So I'm basically a "Nerd in Training" already and have been the last couple years trying to figure out what the hell everyone is talking about all the time in these videos.  I know I can't be alone and there's got to be a lot of people who can relate to what I'm saying who enjoy video reviews but don't necessarily live that culture or grew up with it.  There's a few different video game reviews out there but all of them I know do bad games and no one does good games.  Besides I'd be coming in with a different perspective as a specific character with a goal in mind so I can be different enough there.

I still feel like I'm fantasizing and can't really do this.  I'd have to play the game and see if I can gather enough good material.

Moleman

Well I gathered material, wrote out what I think is a pretty funny script and then had to scrap it.  Like my last one, I couldn't write it to be different enough from another critic to make it worth while.  It would just be another AVGN clone just like the other one would be a NC clone.

But I have a new idea!  A full explanation can be found here: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=12226

Basically it would be a series discussing tv shows called "TV abridged" or something.  I would do a rundown of the series and where its at right now as well as throw jokes in to make it entertaining.  Its something I don't think anyone else has done and it serves a dual purpose of being entertaining and informative.  That way if I'm not really that funny people could at least get something out of it.  The first episode would be done on Lost and I'll see where I go from there.  That's such an easy target with all the plot insanity going on but I won't go overboard though.  The purpose would still be to get people interested in the show I talk about so that they might possibly want to watch it.

If that sounds like a good idea post here or at that link if you have an account.

A video I made for TGWTG TV:

This one will appear in Episode 4, this Sunday at 9:00 PST.

I'm surprised to say this, but... good job, Moleman.  I was expecting something a bit more amateur.  You def have the humor/timing/delivery and some decent editing chops (better than some reviewers who I feel like re-editing in the name of quality).  Biggest thing:  Keep doin it if you wanna do something with it.  I'm talking years if necessary.  Also (and I should be the last one telling you this), but you might wanna work on your lighting as well.

Excellent choice of series too.  Bad comedies is DEF something that needs to be tackled.  I hope you pull it off (your humor/editing seems promising enough).

And, from one Simpsons-referenced-name to another, I say good luck!

Wow thanks man. Nah ignore the video at the top of the the thread, there's no way I can figure to pull off a movie review series and not make it seem like Nostalgia Critic/Nostalgia Chick/Film Brain/Phelous/Cinema Snob/Obscurus Lupa/MikeJ...you get the point.  Its been done and there are enough shows out there that review movies.  It has to be something different.

If I actually tried to do a review "show" instead of collaborate like I'm doing now, it won't be focused on movies, games, comics, or anime.  Also I'd go all out, no more pathetic dude on Youtube filming himself in his room like everything else you see.  It would probably be similar to something like this: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/teamt/eg/dv/24456-italian-jaws

Yeah, that's def setting the bar higher.  Ed Glaser's stuff looks pro in comparison to the others'.  But when it comes down to it (for me anyway), it's all about workin with what you got which is why NC (and AVGN and Cinema Snob) have me coming back to 'em.  Content, insight, hilarity.  That's all I'm lookin for.  And if you can put a nice polish on it, that'll keep me happy too.   ;D

Chaos

This was good, but when are you going to post your video about how to eat an orange? ;)

Well I hope there's still some room for pathetic dudes reviewing movies in their bedrooms.  :-\  I've only just started my own movie review series and at the moment it's pretty much that. Although I'm trying to make it interesting by avoiding the usual B-movies and misfiring Hollywood stuff and doing a series on arthouse films. I'm calling it Brows Held High.

Moleman

I created the opening theme and music for TGWTGTV.  Probably the last time I'll revive this thread then I'll finally let it die.  I still can't believe you guys thought that initial video up top I did over a year ago with zero experience was pretty good.  Makes me wonder what I can do now that I have some experience and an HD Camera.
