It's a fad.

Agreed.  Until 3-D technology is affordable and looks decent on home video, it will remain a fad, as well.

The new Samsung 3D Tvs and Blu ray look pretty good. It is light years past what you get with DVD and the various anaglyph 3d schemes. Yeah it is expensive now... but like every other electronic device before it, if it becomes popular enough it will come down in price.

Michael Bay: Unlikely voice of reason!

http://www.deadline.com/2010/03/michael-bay-james-cameron-skeptical-of-3d-conversions-the-jury-is-out/

Gotta hand it to him, he has no idea how to tell a story, but he understands the technical stuff. "I like things to look cool. 3D post conversion looks lame."

The way I see it... the tech has come a long way and still has a ways to go. It is cool when done right, and has the potential to be even better. Currently I like having the option to see movies in 3D at the theater. It brings value to the movie experince that was increasingly becoming more enjoyable in the comforts of my own living room (all you need is a projector and surround sound, throw in your own favorite chair, and its hard to convince me to go out an see a  movie that I could probably just download or wait for the DVD / BLU-RAY).

Hopefully the tech is given time to grow and isn't halted by narrowmindedness.

Minnesota

Almost forgot...

"And there's the final nail in this absurd 3D show: The eyeglasses. Simply, watching a $200+ million dollar movie with $.03 crappy plastic glasses is just silly. They are not only optically poor but they take almost a full stop of light out of the image. That's almost half the amount of light!  None of the prints or projectors I have seen 3D movies in properly compensate to counteract that loss of light. When I saw Alice In Wonderland at one of the industry screenings—where you think it would be dialed in just right—the image was still painfully dark. The situation in a majority of theaters out there is as bad or worse."

Agree ^^^ ... this is 3D's biggest obstical... but I don't really consider it a make or break yet... watching dark movies will need to change as the tech grows.

I think the question is whether the failure of 3-D since it was invented (why am I the only one who still uses the hypen?) is because it didn't make lots of money or because in general, most filmmakers didn't care to bother. It's not as if the majority of films lend themselves to it anyway. And the only reason it's making money is because I'm assuming the tickets are more expensive.

3D movie tickets set for epic price hike

QuoteStarting Friday, prices for adult admission to 3-D movies will increase an average 8.3% at box offices nationwide, according to market research conducted by investment firm BTIG. Ticket prices for IMAX movies are expected to jump 10%, while prices for regular 2-D movies will rise about 4% on average.

At one AMC theater in New York, the price for a family of four to see a 3-D screening of Dreamworks Animation's "How to Train your Dragon" this Friday will be $63 before popcorn, soda or candy.

Not all 3D Post production looks lame. Believe me when I say the stuff they're doing at our other office, Legend Films / Legend 3D looks positively awesome. Of course it'll never look as good as "True" 3D, but still, it's pretty damn cool.

Anyway Legend's million dollar deals are helping us RiffTrax folks out with getting nice new equipment, so I wouldn't complain too much. :)

You, sir, are in full corporate weasel mode.

I'd still kill to be in your shoes, though . . .  ;D

I've gotta say, this decision WB is making is too much too soon.

3D at this stage should hopefully only be used when it's really important to the movie, and given proper time and effort, not added in post as an afterthought.

The next Harry Potter and potentially Batman in 3D? No thanks, I'll see 2D showings.

I've seen a number of movies in 3D, and they're fun every now and then, especially Avatar, but I don't need to see every tentpole movie pointlessly made 3D.

I saw a 2D showing of Alice in Wonderland, the first 3D movie I chose to see in 2D. It was great, I'm glad I did it.

I definitely won't be seeing Clash of the Titans in 3D, especially after that report on how it looks.

I'm glad theaters give us the option, by including 2D showings of these movies. I like 3D as a technology, I'm not close minded to it, and it'll be cool seeing it improve over the years. But I'm not watching more than a couple truly well done 3D movies a year, anytime soon.

I do hope you're implying we may see a Rifftrax 3D event (live or not) in the near future.

Yeah that's the only problem I'd have with all 3D all the time, the picture doesn't matter to me it looks the same anyway but it's annoying  that it becomes even more expensive to go to the cinema.

"The new Clash of the Titans hits theaters this weekend in 3D — not because the filmmakers wanted it that way, but because Warner Bros. could charge more for it. Which is just plain wrong."

I saw Clash of the Titans today in 2d, thats right folks! 2d in the house. Fairly fun flick, flawed masterpiece.
