I think we need official rules first. For those of us who don't really remember the '80s, we don't want to see a bunch of obscure deep cuts that you old foagies remember that happen to have charted for week. For example, I know there's a bunch of Devo fans here, but just put "Whip It" and leave it at that. I know it's not their best song, or indicative of their work as a whole, but this should be a list of songs that the rest of us recognize. Let's settle that decades-old dispute of "Is Hungry Like The Wolf better than Take On Me?"

The Union of The Snake is better than both.

Y'see, I'm not sure if I even know that one. If nothing else, this list should prove enlightening.

What you are describing is to use only the yearly top 40 charts for eligible songs.  That would kill 95% of my current list.  That would also be extremely boring.  I could care less to see a list made up entirely of clichéd overplayed '80s songs such as the three you mentioned.

I was gonna say that The Sun Always Shines On TV was better than both.  Maybe we are both right.

I believe we are.

Actually not the biggest Duran Duran fan but Ann is and, since she actually spent more of her hormone rich years in the decade, she probably has a clearer picture of the music.

Still I don't know how to sell a contradiction so what do I know?

I see where you're coming from, but wouldn't that lead to another messy list like Guilty Pleasures with 50 songs tied for #1? As long as I don't have to compile it, I guess...

Courtney

I think as long as they charted in the top 40 for any given week, they're fairly memorable. I don't think this list has as much freedom as the guilty pleasure list, with plenty of songs that will appear on many, if not most, lists. There will be some obscure and lesser known in the States tracks, but it's not like we're going to see Ultravox's Vienna running away with the whole thing to the dismay of everyone.

though it totally should...

Sharktopus

My list should be every U2 single that charted in the '80s just to piss off the Bono haters. ;D

How much of the same bloody jangling guitar do you need?

Courtney

I can tell you one thing for sure. My list is going to include a certain Oscar nominated power ballad from a movie featuring this fancy gentleman:

So, not a fan of The Ramones, huh?

Tripe

Not especially.

Nor talentless bog-trotters from Dublin.

That one is currently #6 on my list.  Might move up or down (or off) since I'm not finished yet.

I hate it when people mention specific items before all the lists are in, and they are something that is on my list.  (That's always been a List Of Crap pet peeve of mine.)  Now if I keep it on my list, it might seem like I only added it because someone else mentioned it.  I might swap it out for another Ultravox song, there are at least 3 others that could make my list.

;D

Pak-Man

We should do a list of top 50 grammatical Pet Peeves. :^)

Courtney

Top 50 Things That Piss You Off would be a good one. Until someone submitted a list with the inclusion of "foreigners" and then things would get awkward.

(snort) That's not going to help. A minor example, the biggest song of 1986 was "That's What Friends Are For" by Dionne Warwick. Seriously, when was the last time you heard that song played? Or how about Billy Ocean? Okay, you may have gotten "Caribbean Queen" or "Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car" but what about "Suddenly", "Loverboy" or "When the Going Gets Tough"? All were top 10 hits in the US, but do you ever hear them played on retro stations? Nope. Sherriff's "When I'm With You"?  Debbie Gibson's "Shake Your Love"? "Somewhere Out There" from "An American Tail"?

No, there's not going to be a huge outcry for Billy Ocean or Firehouse in the list because we've mostly forgotten those songs, just like you won't be seeing "No Scrubs", "Sunny Came Home" or Cher's "Believe" on a 90s list. But those "obscure deep cuts" were all over the radio at the time, so I'd expect to see them.
