what was that line on Conan? "Star Trek XVI : The final payment of Shatner's Beach house"
Come on Shatner, like you're not making enough on Boston Legal, at lest  Lloyd maybe needs the money, its not like his royalty checks from Angel's in the Outfield is doing him a lot of good
Um, in my last post I was referring to which Star Trek movie that I would like to see Riffed, in this case, it would be 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' In which Christopher Lloyd appears, as opposed to 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country' in which he does not.  I hope this clears up any confusion...

macleod

Yeah, but Star Trek I is almost unwatchably boring....it almost makes Firewall seem action-packed

SecretAgentSuperDragon

Agreed. If they're going to do another one, let it be Star Trek IV. It hurt so bad.

macleod

Yeah, the "save the whales" episode...

I'm trying to remember if that was better or worse than "free willy"

FrensaGeran

You guys didn't like Star Trek IV either!? V I'll grant you, but IV was the one time in Star Trek history where the levity ACTUALLY WORKED.

Nuclear Wessels!?

Trufire

Haha. That reminds me of the Futurama episode where they meet the full cast of the show.

Fry- Now say Nuclear Vessels.
Chekov- Nuclear Vessels.
Fry- With the Russian accent.
Chekov- No!

You pretty much have to be a star trek fan to think these are "good" movies in and of themselves. I'm pretty certain that if it wasn't Kirk and Spock, most of them would be Battlefield Earth-level productions, think about it: imagine the cast of Wing Commander doing the "save the whales" plot of Star Trek IV

FrensaGeran

I consider the cast part of a movie. The cast for a good deal of the Trek films do a great job, "in and of themselves".  ;)

If you changed the cast, obviously it would be crap. You can say that about ANYTHING. "Jim Carey in.... SCHINDLER'S LIST!"

I'd agree with that, but it's not cast, it's the characters that you grow to love over a TV show. Just envision the exact same scifi plot (say for STIV) carried out without the Star Trek franchise......

.....seems pretty silly now huh?

FrensaGeran

Sure, in your hypothetical situation, Star Trek IV seems silly. I still fail to see how that makes it a bad movie in our real situation.

My point is that you have to be a Star Trek fan to actually enjoy that one...

I kinda like the Original Star Trek, and it drove me nuts. Yes "Nuclear Wessels" is funny, but inasmuch as we were still laughing at Russians.

The only reason Star Trek is even trying a reboot now is because of name recognition. If they had a new project come out called "The Adventures of Hammy and Pointy-Ears" and it seemed similar in concept and execution to the ST franchise, you'd have a lot of angry trekkers going "Rip-off!"

So my point is (if I have one) that just because it's a Trek movie with Trek actors doesn't make it immune to the idea that the movie is bad. As anyone here can attest, there is good sci-fi (Blade Runner) and there is terrible sci-fi (Battlefield Earth). There are a lot more factors that go into considering something bad than just how the actors did or how well a movie is shot, so on and so forth.

Also - all of these are opinions and therefore subjective in nature. That is all :)

HIGHLY subjective, blade runner was terrible.

Understood. Star Trek V was a Trek movie with Trek actors, and it was balls-to-the-wall terrible. Trust me, even as a Trekkie, I have no delusions of Trek Infallibility. And I also understand that, for whatever reason, someone may not like the Trek movies. But I need everyone to understand I think Star Trek VI is one of my favorite movies out of its own merits as a film, and not as a Trek Movie. I think it's well paced, well acted, tense, and memorable.

But then again, I've never noticed that Shatner was a bad actor, so maybe I am insane. I think he's great.  :o
