We're deciding whether or not to eliminate post counts altogether. There is an option to show post counts on a per-board basis.

We have removed them temporarily to give you a feel of how it'll look without the counts displayed by your info on the post display.

Our main reason for asking this is because a lot of random or miscellaneous posts are often attributed to wanting to increase the user's post count. We feel that this number is cause for more junk posts than actual discussion. However if we do get rid of post counts, we will STILL make them accessible to you on the View Member Profile pages.

What do you guys think?

Conor

If getting rid of them makes it so that you can read the last page of a thread and have at least the vaguest idea of what the thread was originally about, I'm all for it.

SecretAgentSuperDragon

Or we could just delete the mindless riddle thread, and ask posters to make valid contributions. It's not like you're getting paid for every post.

We had similar discussions when Tarantulas reached 1,000 posts way before everyone else, and now we're having a similar one now.

I guess it's inevitable.

MrTorso

As long as we still get the snappy nicknames (i.e. Big Montana, Not Hurt By Pain etc..) i say ditch them from the post info and leave them in profile pages.

in my personal defense, i couldnt care less if you have them or not.  Although i think the actual POSITOIN thing is cool, its not gonna stop me from posting any less.  Which also means that i dont really regard any of my posts as really all that frivoulous i would have posted them anyways.  I certianly dont think getting rid of them is gonna help keep these topics on "track" so to speak.  Its just the natural (albeit sad) course of discussion.

Hmm, getting rid of the titles would be a mistake.  That actually serves a purpose.  It shows users who has been around the longest (and had the most time to spam), so they know which posters probably know the most about rifftrax.  Though I don't think the post count will be missed too much.  The only people who would miss it are those who liked boosting their post count, so expect a lot of short posts stating their disapproval of the decision.

Did you just insert a way that no one could disagree with you without looking like they are boosting their post count ;)

Well I think spam has gone up a lot lately, don't know if this will directly stop it, but I was always for no post count.

Yes, I did.  Let's just hope this forum isn't like the amazon forums.  Any thread started there that suggest the toning down of the spam is immediately clogged with spam.  There was one thread about people Bumping threads too much.  It was at the top of the forum for a month.

I think the mods are just looking for a way to tone down all the rampant postings. They want a break!!

I don't think it's gonna change anything. I honestly don't pay any attention to my post count 'til I hit a milestone of some sort. I just like posting in the many varied topics because I like the people here. I think what we have is a Forum that's really gotten to know each other. We've been posting together and sharing opinions and that's made us want to find out more and so more discussion is taking place. While there are a couple questionable posts now and then, I don't see anything too problematic. Everything is properly filed and discussions are carried on without incident. I don't see people coming here and just posting random yesses and nos and me-toos. Every post adds a little something more, even if that something is a little goofing around. I also don't think I've ever seen anyone SERIOUSLY accused of boosting their post count. It's all just good natured ribbing and I haven't seen any evidence that anyone really cares how many posts they have. It's just something to talk about when we're bored. I know I'll still be posting at the same rate as always, with spikes in my post count whenever there's a good debate or 20 questions game. I know Sarcasm will continue posting like crazy because, as I understand it, the man's bored out of his mind in his current situation. I know T-Rants will continue posting because it's what he does. I know the crazy discussions and fun debates and random joking will continue (Or at least it'd better! :^)). This is a fun community and I don't see any problems with it.

No just kidding, yeah seriously i dont really think there is a problem of anyone really boosting their post count.  This is seriously the most interesting thing going for me,  heck where else can I get a CIVIL conversation about the death penalty and divine morality.

Agree'd.

Get rid of the post count and leave the levels

Getting rid of the post counts won't change that. It's just the nature of the board and the people who post on it, personally the randomness that topics go on these boards is quite funny to me and far more interesting than other boards are. Though if some one is making one word posts ten times a day or in other ways obviously just trying to boost there post count I am totally against that.

As for the removal of the post count thing, it doesn't really matter to me either way. I have commented before in other threads that the obsessive nature that some people have about their post count is getting out of hand but I think that is just a natural progression of a new board. Come six months from now no one is gonna give two shits about how high there post count is.....hopefully.
