The Crow

In regards to all of the comic book movies out there, you have to give props to the one that influenced "The Matrix" and many other action movies to come after it.

As a Comic Book and a storyline I have always loved "The Crow" more than any others. The setup is just perfect - he's The Punisher and the Grim Reaper all in one, and still has that one fatal weakness of his crow being vulnerable to pain and death.

I thought the style of the comics was always astounding - and you can almost see Frank Miller reading the books when he was younger and being influenced by them.

****

That being said, I think it's just tragic that the movies have declined so dang much. There was all this mystique about the first one (and a little bit for the second) but the three that came afterwards just plain sucked... (that is, sort of sucked - cuz I mean, without major studio support, it's hard to pull off a convincing action movie).

Anyway - here's to Eric Draven and his wicked awesome guitar solos. Anyone else want to see a really sweet Crow movie actually make it to theaters and revive the series?? Who'd be a decent Crow if they made a new one?

I have to agree. I love the series and thought the movie, as inaccurate to the comic as it was, was pretty groundbreaking for the motif used. I heard it cited as borrowing from the first Batman movie but I've always thought it had a style of its own.

As much as I love the movie, I love the comic way more. The Crow was written as more a symbol or diety than merely a man brought back from the dead. He had no weaknesses but didn't seem to abuse his power all that much, just to justify his means to his ends. Although he wasn't the first anti-hero in comicbook-dom, he's definatly the purest example of one.

As far as the movie series goes, I agree that it went downhill from the first. The TV series was unforgivable. I'm glad I missed most of it.

If they were to do a new Crow movie, I would hope they would borrow from the comic a little more. A perfect adaptation is a pipedream those of us in the Crow fan community have entertained for years, mostly because the formula wouldn't work in Hollywood movie form (IE: giving the Crow weaknesses, less symbolism, more action, ect).

The actor would need to have that dark intensity thing going on, but beyond that I couldn't tell anyone who should play him. Someone who preferably LOOKED the part, but that's always up in the air. Dressing like the Crow is the easiest costume in the world.

Here me out now: Johnny Depp?

I've only seen one aspect of the Crow's world, and that's the first movie, with Brandon Lee.

I liked the look of the film and the idea behind the story, I just hated the "I'm cooler than you" aspect of the over-the-top acting. It killed the movie. Made it into a cheesefest.

I highly recommend the first comicbook series (why they did others, I will never know) in that case. The movie only chipped the tip of the iceberg in terms of the atmosphere and I find the story to be far more riveting. Most people do. As great (well, we think so anyway!) as the movie was, it was a very pale version of all the story elements.

And I hadn't considered Depp before, Pak. Although I would say he's almost too obvious a choice.

Yeah before suggesting it myself I wanted to see if anyone else would suggest Johnny. I think Johnny would be perfect. He definitely has the right persona and has performed similar parts. He'd be as dark as he was in Eddie Scissor Hands and as gun-toatingly awesome as in Once Upon A Time.

Depp might also have the popularity to bring the franchise back from the grave. HAHA! I made a joke relevant to the subject matter. I'm so proud of myself.

PS, throw any of these directors in the mix, and the film would be quite memorable (positively):

- Quentin Tarrantino
- Pete Jackson
- Ridley Scott
- Sam Reimi
- Alfonzo Cuaron
- James Cameron

Oh and the best crow face was reserved for one of the worst movies. In Salvation, the crow markings were /burned/ into his flesh by the electric chair. Flippin' sweet.

I actually enjoyed the third movie a lot more than the second movie. I know it was bad, but it seemed less bad. Maybe because there was no "magic" in it (or whatever the heck that was supposed to be).

Cuz it was the only Crow movie that didn't directly mimic the first ;)

The Crow sequels are like the Matrix sequels, they should have just let it lie at the first film.

Have to agree, there. But you know how it is. If a movie makes a ton of money and/or is popular, then sequels must be made until the franchise can be milked for all its worth.

PsypherPunk

I have to agree with the Depp suggestion. Physically he looks the part and he's remarkably talented. I remember a while back when there was talk of Rob Zombie scripting/directing one of the sequels. He had plans for The Crow to be an older man or something; I'd love to have seen what came of Zombie's suggestions.

That said, I don't quite hate the sequels as much as everyone else seems to. The third was probably the best of the sequels but really suffered under a lower budget. That said, I rather enjoyed the last one. Edward Furlong actually did okay in his role and Boreanaz looked like he was having a stupid amount of fun (but the director should have kept him on a tighter leash). Of course, there was no excuse for Tara Reid, Dennis Hopper or Macy Gray. All deserve a good slap for their contributions.

Tarantulas

I doubt that Depp would be interested in Edward Furlong's sloppy seconds.
