Apologies if someone has already shared this link somewhere on this forum. My attention span is smaller than a flea's of late:

This reeks of a smear compaigne against Twihards. I find it hard to believe 100% of the accounts are true, but if even a few are, how messed up. I hear all day how bad Transformers sucks but it doesn't make me want to resort to violence.

I have a hard time believing that some of the posts on this board are real, only due to the dialouge: "How DARE you say Twilight is a horrible book!" then attempts to "slit her throat" with a shank at the pencil sharpener???  Also, on Anti-Twilighter compares the Antis to the "Jews" and Twihards to the "Nazis".  That is.............just wow.
I realize that I'm generalizing here, but as is often the case when I generalize, I don't care.

Hence my earlier statement.  I'm inclined to believe that if all of those accounts were true, it would have little to do with Twilight itself and far more to do with some behavioral issues on the part of the attackers. Defending Twilight would just be an excuse. I'm also betting that if there is any common violence in regards to this series, it's probably in the form of Twilight fan on Twilight fan.

And yeah....I may loathe the Twilight franchise, but I would hardly call Twihards Nazis. I think everyone should meet some actual Nazis before using that term so liberally in situations that don't even deserve it.

Yeah....wiping Anti-Twilight websites off the face of the Earth so that a fan never has to see an opinion that doesn't parrot what they think isn't anything at all like what the Nazis did to Jews...even in the most microscopic way.

Even on a microscopic level these two things are simply incomparable.  Twilight is not quite the global crisis that mass genocide is, you know?

No one is saying it is.  But I guess Fascists are free to be Fascists as long as they don't kill anyone.

Well... killing off a whole bunch of people is undeniably wrong. Making a whole bunch of people incredibly stupid isn't exactly doing them a favor.

(I know that's not what's being said or implied, I'm just saying.)

Sounds like some of the usual "Distorting Headline to Tie In Tragic Event with Latest Fad" gremplork. It's like when they say "Man shot to death over offensive myspace account" and mention much later in the article that the offensive part was the victim's myspace account boasted of torrid affairs he was carrying on with the shooter's wife, and anyway he found out from a neighbor first.

ThatGirlWithFreckles: Twilight is way more toxic than those things. At least the Beast locking up Bell was portrayed as wrong, and it was something she did not like about her. Bella falls in love with Edward mainly because of his barely restrained desire to kill her.

Also, you read the fourth book? In my world, "quick easy reads that were fun while they lasted" does not connect with "boy gives his girlfriend a c-section with his TEETH."
Love doesn't hurt. It kills.

Being a genocidal maniac is not one of my turn ons.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

Violent things happen in books and movies all the time.  It is up to the person who is reading them to read them comprehensively. I found them a fun easy read.   I'm not defending them to the death or anything, I'm just saying that it isn't the book's fault that people are turning it into a psychotic frenzy.  I've read and seen things that include far more unsavory depictions of relationships and life, but in no way do I begin believing that the author is personally telling me how to live my life.

Obviously the girls who are committing these acts (the ones that are true) really need help and I feel sorry that they are so open to imaginary suggestions.  But, the problem goes deeper than "they just read Twilight and flipped their wig."  These issues existed beforehand and simply blaming a book for their mental instability is an easy cop-out.

Also, the fourth book, should not represent the entire series.

Quite true.  Any more than a couple kids flip out and people want to ban video games... or music... or pretty much you name it.

No one thing someone is exposed to is sufficient to cause them to act bizarrely (unless it is a psychoactive substance [including everything from drugs to heavy metals like lead and mercury], or being raised by psychotic/grossly incompetent parents).

This isn't people wanting to ban websites because they're afraid of violent repercussions....

This is one hack writer wanting to take away the right of others to criticize her work publicly because it hurts her feelings or her sales or both.

ThatGirlWithTheFreckles

I highly doubt that Stephanie Meyer would ever succeed in shutting down every Anti-Twilight website that exists.  And no, I don't agree with her wanting to even do that.  As an author she should learn to take criticism, and if reading the criticism affects her personally, she really needs to reevaluate her place in the public spotlight.

Would you know if any of those claims are true by chance (by knowing members and/or posting your own incidents)? Honestly not trying to be a jerk, just genuinely curious.

Really: if you don't want 'public discourse', don't appear to the public in any way with anything people might want to talk about.

If she really is instigating all this (attempts at banning anti-Twilight sites, etc.), she's FAR more disturbed than her characters.  That implies that she feels a Cheney-level desire to control the world's thinking :speechless: ...or else a perception that only damaged little girls who can't deal with thoughts different than their own are her readership (which would say a LOT about who she thinks her readership is)!  Unfortunately, if any of the stories are true, she may be right about some of her readership.

I think I'm a reasonably sensible person, and I've read all 4 Twilight books and enjoyed them thoroughly for what they were: quick, easy reads that did not require much thought but were fun while they lasted.  The first movie is downright horrible, thanks especially to two lead actors who have zero chemistry and tremendous lolls in dialogue that I guess were supposed to create dramatic tension or something....I don't know.  The Rifftrax of Twilight are one of my favorite Riffs, (especially the part where Bill sings along with the Edward playing the piano.)  The second movie, however, is reasonably better.  I'm not saying it's a cinematic masterpiece, but it tries to have some action, faster plot development, and more focus on the Jacob character (the only character in the entire series who is genuinely likable and somewhat developed).

I do worry what girls in the tween age range are gleaning from their obsession with Twilight.  It's no different, though, than what I grew up with which were animated Disney princesses.  Most are the same as the Bella character (if not significantly more cheerful): hollow headed empty vessels that must have an equally personality devoid male to complete their lives.  However, while growing up and watching these characters and pretending to be them etc., I did not grow up to think that if a man kidnapped me and locked me in a tower that it must be his psycho way of saying he loved me.  Hopefully these girls will be able to understand that Edward and Bella's relationship is simply a work of fiction.

The saddest part is that the whole Twilight thing exists solely into capturing a ripe gender and age group to turn them into compulsive consumers who will buy any crap with a Twilight logo on it.  The other day I was in Border's Books and I saw Twilight Brand Packaging Tape.  It was like ten bucks.  Who the fuck needs Twilight Brand Packaging Tape?  It has truly gotten out of hand.  But it joins Hannah Montana, High School Musical, the Jonas Brothers, etc. in a marketing machine to take little girl's and parent's money straight out of their pockets.  THAT'S the saddest part to me is that they are being led straight into a lifestyle of blind consumption.

They are fun to read.  Though I don't quite agree on the Jacob part, he annoyed me.  Though Taylor Lautner, who plays him, seems like a good guy.
Stephenie Meyer originally had only two books for the saga, because originally she didn't have a target audience and the second book, a 600-700 page novel that she wrote and gave to her sister, was more like Breaking Dawn than New Moon.  It was probably the publishing company that told her that she should make the target audience teens and she should make a couple more.
