Was Jonathan Coulton a stranger to you?

We got more than a few confused reactions during Coulton's performance last night, and if you fell into this category, here's your chance to catch up on the great music he's been putting out there:

He put together a quick primer for newbies. All of his music is Creative Commons and free until you want to pay for it. Enjoy!
"When You Grow Up" is totally free to watch, and totally cheap to download.

My siblings and I seemed to be the only ones in our theater who were already JoCo fans. At the very least, we were the only ones singing along to "The Future Soon". Several others joined in the zombie chorus for "Re: Your Brains", though, and everybody laughed at the right places in the songs, so he seemed to be a relative hit.

it wasn't until he started singing that it dawned on me, ohhhh yeah, code monkey/portal guy.

a quick bio, verbal or video would have been helpful.

unfortunately people in the theater were too self conscious to really get into the audience participation bit.

he had excellent stage presence.

Yeah, even I'm guilty of that, though I was intent on having a good time.  I think Mike/Kevin'/Bill should've been the ones to kick the audience participation into high gear, right from the start, then the Zombie stuff would have been a piece of cake.  I think there should have been some fun participation during the movie, too.

No one in my theater seemed to know who he was, and I only knew his name in association with a riff I haven't watched yet and as the guy behind the Portal song.  That was enough to get me to applaud at the beginning, but he was greeted with mostly silence around me.  By the middle of his first song they loosened up a bit, and it sounded like everyone got into playing Zombie.  He got a good round of applause at the end of his set, but it unfortunately ended with the last of our brief couple second long blackouts.

My friends knew who he was, and when the signal died a group of people started singing his stuff in our theater.

I hadn't heard his RiffTrax, but I remembered the name, and I liked his songs. (Speaking of which, Kevin does a terrific zombie impression.) I wouldn't mind having him back if there's another RiffTrax Live.

He wasn't exactly a stranger to me but I hadn't heard his music. I really liked it though and I will be buying a CD.

I'm gona be upfront and say he was a stranger to me. Personally, I don't think the music number worked. It just ruined the rifftrax mood between the short and the actual movie.

Thrifty

Not completely.   I'd watched the Tron riff that he did, and I heard he was involved in performing Ballad of the Sneak.  The zombie song was lame though, and it did not leave me wanting more.

Coulton wasn't involved in "Ballad of the Sneak", his co-riffers Paul and Storm were. Coulton's main claims to fame are "Still Alive" from Portal, "Code Monkey", and his acoustic cover of "Baby Got Back". And his extensive catalogue of other songs, his Thing-A-Week project from a few years back, and his championing of Creative Commons.
