Why don't people care about the quality of kid's movies??

As far as your three rules... yea... those suck.
Yeah I pretty much agree with that. I think that those criteria are fine for an adult to use to decide whether they want to watch a particular kids film or not (they're as good as any other) but they are hopeless when it comes to deciding if a kid is going to enjoy the movie.

I'm certainly not using this criteria to determine whether or not my kids will enjoy the movie, I use the criteria to determine whether or not I want my kids to enjoy the movie.  I think that one of the problems with today's society is that we will gobble up whatever crap is placed before us--be it movies, music, food, or anything else, and I don't want my kids to do that.

And I'm not saying that my criteria is good for everyone else.  I don't want everyone to have my same taste in movies.  I feel that in participating in this site we all recognize that everyone loves different things, and we can all celebrate different opinions.  I'm just curious if other people have criteria of their own.

Now, if you're trying to get them to develop some taste and sense of what is good film as opposed to crappy films....they're too young yet.

That is exactly what I'm trying to do.

For example, like many grown men, I can't stand Hannah Montana.  In my house, I don't ever have to listen to or watch Hannah Montana even though my daughters friends and cousins all love it.  Here's how it went with my daughter:
"Daddy, can we watch Hannah Montana?"
"No.  I think that there's lot's of better things that we can watch besides Hannah Montana."
"How come?"
"Well, the people that write her songs and make her TV show aren't trying very hard.  They just throw it together without really caring.  Then they expect you to watch it because they put it on TV, and make a bunch of commercials for it."
Then I followed it up with introducing her to music like the Beatles and TV shows like Samurai Jack.  She hasn't shown any further interest in Hannah Montana.  I think I've at least gotten her to think before jumping on the bandwagon.  You may say that I'm mean, but just think about it the next time you're forced to watch the Jonas Brothers.

Like I said, you're perfectly entitled to do so.

Personally I never liked much that was specifically tailored towards kids ( a few things in movies almost nothing in books) when I was a kid. If ever I have any I'll see if they're like me in that regard or not.

The closest thing I've come to taste shaping plans for any potential kids is Ann and I have talked about making sure the kids eat a bunch of spicy foods from a fairly early age (Indian, Thai, that sort of thing) to hopefully develop an appetite for interesting and nutritious foods.

That's funny.  I've done the same thing.  My daughter can eat a whole eel sushi roll by herself if I'm not fast enough.  One of the first things she ate when she was going to solid food was Hot and Sour soup (she loved the tofu).

THE QUEEN!!!

This is why I love Pixar so much---it's always great and always kid friendly. It bugs me, too, how many stupid movies come out that make millions of dollars.

No one is saying you're mean.  In fact, I think everyone here would stand up and applaud you and think that your heart is in the right place.  And anyone willing to stand up to the Disney promotion machine deserves an award.

It's just that your first post looked like it was full of knee-jerk criteria for rejecting some movies over others.  Had these awful visions in my head of your kids seeing nothing but Baby Einstein, Sesame Street and Vegi-Tales (or whatever the current "educational" crap is - 99% of which only teaches them to regurgitate facts rather than encourage them to think).  Nothing fun for the sake of fun.

We're on your side.

Plus that there are lots of trailers that have things in them that were never in the film.  Look up some of the trailers for Wall-E on YouTube (assuming you've seen that movie) for example.

I remember being very disappointed when I went to see Ernest Goes to Jail and the funniest scene from the trailer, him being in the prison cafeteria and having all the cutlery fly across the room and stick to him, and then yelling Ernestly "OH NO!  I'M MAGNETIC!" wasn't even in the movie.

btb, no child is too young to learn good from bad. when I was 4 I was watching Hitchcock and Capra and classic Disney because I thought Scooby Doo and other "made for kids" fare was terrible in terms of filmmaking. I couldn't express it too well yet, obviously, but I could tell the difference.

Doctor Who?

Me too.

I rarely watched Tv with my friends when I was a kid because they were all into Ninja Turtles,Power Rangers, and Pokemon.  I liked Hitchcock,John Wayne and Roy Rogers Westerns,Star Trek,Sherlock Holmes, and Jeeves and Wooster when i was a kid.

Don't get me wrong there was some kids stuff I liked(Mostly comic books and Reboot)but I never had time for the popular stuff because for as long as I can remember I found it kind of dumb.  Kids can tell good from bad.

Hitchcock when you were four???

Again, as long as your raised right in the first place....

Doctor Who?

Yep.  North By Northwest has always been one of my favorite movies.  Also I loved old radio shows when I was a kid too.  I found The Shadow kind of scary.

But this goes against all this (so called) research that exposure to violent acts at a young age will make you an axe murderer!  North By Norhwest has a guy getting a knife in the back, kidnapping, attempted murder, sex without marriage....don't you know you should be out on a cross-country crime spree as we speak?   ;)

When I was that age it was Tarzan (the old, good ones), Japanese monsters and Universal Monster movies.  And I only occasionally want to trample Tokyo under foot....but I control myself.

Hey I'm only 24 there is still time for all that.  I hope.

Of course the thing that's going unsaid in all of this is that the reason that bad kids films flourish is that they're "babysitters" and "play dates".

Just a way to get the kids out of the house for a few hours.

Hell, they did that when I was a kid.  That's why I saw Help! with my older cousins when I was 6.....they convinced the adults that I wanted to go too so it was worth it to them to take all of us.

And taking them to the movie shuts them up about it.  To some parents quiet is more important that anything else.

You'd be suprised the amount of people who believe what you were saying about violent movies cause people to be violent, I'm pretty sure I've had peiople on this site essentially tell me I must be a sociopath because I like Saw.

Yeah, I was watching Hammer horror with my uncles when I was about 6 which lead to me being the only 8 year old to dress up and Freddy Kruger for dress up day... school councellers where called  ;D

About your spelling?

(It's a joke. It's (almost) all a joke, really.)
