godzilla 200o was the first real odzilla movie i saw in theaters.  was pretty awesome.  still holds up fairly well even drspite the on purpose silly dubbing.  i am not a huge fan of the suit but it has its good points.  i love the action in this one it s all quite well done, and also the human story is fairly entertaining.  and a nice three sttoooges gag to boot.  orga is an odd monster but its pretty cool when he tries to absorb godzi.  i wish sony would finally give us the japanese cut aftr promising it that one time.  a great rousing come back after the bad times.  8 of 10

Argh!

In Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, the non-Godzilla monster is not a crab, it is a shrimp!

Look at the narrow claws, the narrow tail. Hell, just notice that it has a tail instead of a wide body. Shrimp!

Ebirah. ebi = shrimp.

I don't know why it bugs me, but it does. Shrimp is funnier than crab anyway. ;D

Crabs also walk sideways...

I dunno I guess the pincer claws and such make us think crab. Or lobster.

plus it is named ebirah, and ebi is japanese for shrimp.

Godzilla vs. Megaguiras (2000)

Can't say that this one is better than Godzilla 2000. The story just wasn't as cool. Keeping in the tradition of the Millenium series, this film ignores all previous entries... despite using the same suit as the last movie.

In this reality, Godzilla has appeared three times before: 1954 (the original film), 1966 (which I don't think is in a specific movie), and 1996. Kiriko, the main character/babe of the movie, loses her commanding officer in the 1996 attack, and dedicates her life to stopping Godzilla. It was kind of cool seeing some shots of the original film redone with the new suit, but the way it's presented implies that it is the same Godzilla, and that he hadn't been killed by the Oxygen Destroyer.

Flash forward to 2001, Kiriko is now one of the main people involved in the "G-Grasper" program, and enlists the help of techno-wizard Kuto. The main weapon developed by the G-Grasper program is the Dimiension Tide: A man-made mini-black hole. The idea is to create a temporary black hole that would swallow up Godzilla. A test in a rural area proves successful...

...but all is not well. Somehow an insect was caught in the Tide's path, and somehow mutated, and a large egg was created. A small boy brings the egg home, where it makes everything around it wet. Trying to keep discrete, the boy drops the egg into a sewer. Before long, Tokyo is engulfed in water, and giant insects are flying about.

Cue Godzilla, who is drawn to Tokyo for some unexplained reason. He clashes with the swarm of bugs, which gnaw and sting him repeatedly. The swarm survivors return to their underwater Tokyo lair, injecting a huge larva with the energy siphoned of Godzilla... thus giving birth to MEGAGUIRUS!!!

He's The Orkin Man's worst nightmare!

The impending knock-down drag-out between G & M is well executed, and a much better fight than the Orga fight last movie. The Megaguirus puppet looks like a puppet though, so it's less convincing at times. The CGI "little Megas" looked a lot better, especially during the swarm fight.

In the end, Godzilla vanquishes Megaguirus in his traditional way, and the G-Graspers use the collapsing Dimension Tide to vanquish Godzilla... at least until the end of the credits...

I give this one a 4.5. I liked 2000 a lot better overall. I was literally just waiting for the fight to happen because I was growing impatient. Not a good sign even for a campy film. Godzilla 2000 was a decent story with some OK effects. This was a bad story with some pretty good effects. Probably the best effects yet in a 'Zilla film. But ultimately, it just wasn't as entertaining as previous films.

i know a lot of g-fans who think this is the best godzilla movie i dont really get it.  i think this is a step down after godzilla 2000.  i agree its a little slow in the beginning and it is kinda just waiting for the final fight which imho is not as good as the one in 2000.  some of the effects are kinda bad if i recall there was something with godzilla jumping or somehow being launched that just did not work for me.  i should start watching this films again before i do my reviews cause i havent watched these ones nearly as much as the old ones well see if i can find the time to watch gmk in a bit.  i give this 6 of 10.

One thing I will say that differentiates this from other G films is that Megaguiras isn't just the "guy in a suit" variety monster. So that alone is refreshing.

Doctor Who?

I just finished the first Godzilla movie and all I can say is....

Wow.

I didn't expect anything this intense in a Godzilla movie or this well made.

This is the only Monster movie that I think is just as good as the 1933 version of King Kong.

This may also be the only monster movie ever made where real attention is payed to the massive loss of life the monster causes.

I will be buying this one on DvD as soon as I have some money.

Am I the only one who wishes the print had been restored before release.

Parts of the movie look fine but other parts look awful.

Any way 10/10 for me.

I'm there with you, man. I love all the Godzilla movies for what they are, but when I saw Gojira when it came to theaters a few years ago, I saw what the series was really about. A lot deeper and thought out than any of the G movies that followed it (or even the American bastardized version that made its way here).

I didn't rate it in my initial review, but I am also giving in 10/10. It is the scale by which all the other 'Zilla movies are graded. I don't think I explained that thoroughly in my introduction.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong I love watching the later movies for what they are but I was surprised that I was kept on the edge of my seat for the whole runtime.

Also I was really interested in the human characters, something that doesn't happen in the two latter films I saw.

Also is it just me or is it kind of shocking to see Godzilla killing so many people when in latter movies he was turned into an anti hero who saves Japan from real monsters?

What I always find funny is that in even the antihero movies, Godzilla comes in, wrecks half the city and no one seems to care about all the people who were in those buildings he tore to pieces.

It's like the Death Star argument. Luke saves the day for the Rebels, but in the process kills thousands, if not millions of contractors and civilians just doing their jobs. Not to mention any of the soldiers who might have been conscripted into service (we are talking about an evil Empire here). Death Star by Michael Reaves is an interesting look into all those faceless people, by the way.

Anyway, some of the other G movies do mention the carnage. Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah - Giant Monsters All-Out Attack is one of them. Of course, they do a switcheroo in that one and make Godzilla the bad guy and Ghidorah good. But I'll save a discussion of that one for when we get to it.

Doctor Who?

But at least when it comes to the Death Star the Death Star had already killed billions and it's looks like Tarken and Vader would be more then happy to blow up more planets just for kicks so Luke is saving a lot more people then he is hurting.

Plus Stormtroopers are clones, and most of the Imperials were constantly saying "Rebel Scum..."

Back to Godzilla, like I said in the original post, here's G smashing through all these buildings, and there's no mass hysteria in the streets, no cars fleeing or people in the buildings being smashed. Maybe they just got used to giant lizards showing up and knew how to evacuate quickly...
