For what it's worth, I have not met a single Trekker that disliked it, nor have I read a single fanpage review that has been negative.

Nice to meet you.

Yes, I saw it. Got talked into it by a friend - they even paid. So I went and tried to keep an open mind.

Two words: New Coke. Change for no good reason.  There was no frustration with the TOS characters by the fan base. Just couldn't ask the original actors to go on and on. Rather than just do a prequel and recast the parts they have to change everyone's lifestory.

Zachary Quinto was wonderful. He played Spock (as the part was given to him) perfectly.  And I liked Karl Urban as McCoy as far as that went.  Don't know what to think of Pine as Kirk since 90% of the time he spent either on his back being beaten and/or choked or hanging off the edge of something....and the rest of his time being an insufferably smug asshole.

That having been said.

Spoiler

  • So in the future they don't have the capacity to tell the sex of a baby before birth? Or did Nero showing up change that too? How could it...it was before he showed?
  • Nero showing up changes the reality of Kirk's life since just before his birth. Including that he no longer has a brother named Sam (see the episode Operation: Annihilate!). Except that Sam was his older brother.  Ooops.  Guess they left him to die on the ship with Dad?
  • "Spock Prime" as he's called needed this ttime's Spock to develop a friendship with Kirk...says it will make him a better person and all of that. Only how can he know that? The Kirk he knew was a man raised by his father and mother in a family with an older brother.  This reality's Kirk was raised by a Step-Dad who could be a saint or a jerk and as an only child perhaps. These two people would grow up to be the exact same person? Why? Are we back to this "Nature vs. Nuture" crap from Nemesis? Didn't we decide that it's the latter?
  • Did Nero showing up change that Spock was married as a child to T'Pring as well? Spock Prime was always keeping Nurse Chappel at arms length for that reason.
  • When you divorce in the future - even though people don' t use money anymore - your wife can still take everything you have. Sounds like the former Mrs. McCoy got his Southern accent in the divorce as well.
  • Why didn't Krik just wear a t-shirt that read "I screwed with the computer program" while he was at it? How obnoxious was that? And the way that the scenario was beat wasn't even halfway clever - say a lucky shot or something programmed in. No, the simulation has a glitch and the Klingons have an unexplained brain fart and their shields are down for no reason. But then, your main character is rarely smarter than your writers (who, btw, left out all the stuff about deciding whether or not to go into the neutral zone - and if this was before the Kilingon Wars and there was none, why are the Klingons the bad guys in this?).
  • The change in timeline somehow turned Vulcan into Alderaan. They have no weapons, no ships of any kind even though - according to ENT which predates Nero's arrival and not effected - Vulcan gave Earth all of these things after First Contact. This Vulcan also doesn't have the brain power to figure out what's happening to it even though one can clearly see a laser boring into the planet's surface from a ship over the planet.  They call for Starfleet's help and the leaders go to a cave to pray?  How is it these people managed to travel through space to make first contact with earth to start with?
  • in fact, was I the only one who heard "You must go to the Dagobah system" in my head as Kirk was walking across the icy tundra? And thought Snow Beast when that thing came running toward him?  And - again - bigger monster has meal right there, leaves it behind to chase our "hero". Um, yeah.
  • Gravity will pull someone towards a planet even when they're outside that planet's atmosphere (wont bother with the thing about the heat of re-entry involved). Really? And Romulan sensors from the future won't pick up anything launched from a shuttle coming toward their ship?
  • Red still means 'dead man walking" even if it's red jump armor.
  • The Romulans that Spock promises to deal with the supernova in the mind-meld flashback look like run of the mill Romulans. Nero and all his crewmen are bald and have facial tribal tattoos. WTF?
  • In this timeline, black holes/singularities stop eating up things at one planet/ship.
  • How would launching the red matter into the supernova keep Romulus from being destroyed since the singularity would have sucked up the only star in the system? The planet would die either way.
  • Romulus doesn't have scientists either...they have to get help from Vulcan...whom they generationally hate
  • Always remember - when you all need a marble sized amount of red matter to cause a artificially created black hole, make sure you take an amount the size of Rover from "The Prisoner". And if the guy who you know is pissed at you for not saving his planet captures your ship, don't destroy the red matter. Let him have it. He won't do anything bad with it, right?.
  • It is possible for a Romulan ship from the future to hide in Federation space for 25 years and only have one encounter that anyone notices?
  • Anyone remember a scene with this Kirk, Spock and Bones together on their own? In fact, did it seem like they were trying like hell not to?  Remember a previous TOS movie that didn't have one.  Dare I say that the three actors have NO chemistry at all?
  • New Spock mind-melds with the Romulan and finds out where the ship is...but somehow learns nothing about who was flying it when it's pilot had been this crew's 25 year obsession
  • At no time in those 25 years did someone think "You know, Federation or not, the sun is still going supernova on a certain date. Maybe we should tell someone on Romulus...take this red matter to them?"
  • When did Ben Cross forget how to act?  He looked amazingly uncomfortable in his own skin throughout the movie
  • Am I the only one who finds a Romulan who opens his ultimatum to a beaten opponent with "Hi" laughable?
  • JJ Abrams sure likes the look of dead bodies floating in space, doesn't he?
  • He also really, really likes close ups of Chekov...who somehow became a transporter genius in this timeline when I think I remember him operatng one once in TOS.
  • Which of these is more annoying: The Constantly Moving Camera Trick (that even as Kirk and Pike are sitting at a table and talking the freaking camera won't hold still for a second)? Or the lights being shined straight into your eyes over and over?

And that's just from one viewing.   >:(

Geez, and they say Trekkies have no objectivity.... I wonder why.  It looks like you'd rather have someone rewrite the Bible.

It's called a "reimagining" because it DOESN'T take place in the same cannon/universe of all the "Star Trek we already know"  If it HAD been, it would just be a boring rehashing of things we already know, and there wouldn't be a bit of anything new to it.  "Kirk" would have simply just been a really bad immitation of Shatner.

As far as I know, Abrams got the blessing to rethink the history and backstory and characters... while still keeping the general feel and concept and essence of "Star Trek"

I absolutely loved this movie, and I am looking forward to more.
...and there he was, reigning supreme at number two.  The One... The Only... The Unabeefer.

Quote'Star Trek' Has Whopping $76.5 Million Opening
Sunday, May 10, 2009

LOS ANGELES  —  "Star Trek" beamed itself up to the top of the box office, earning $76.5 million in its opening weekend.

Paramount Pictures had estimated that the movie would make about $50 million for the weekend, but figured that strong reviews helped carry it to the bigger opening.

Director J.J. Abrams' reboot of the beloved sci-fi franchise made $72.5 million from Friday through Sunday, plus $4 million just in pre-midnight screenings Thursday, the studio said Saturday. That cumulative figure includes a record $8.2 million in IMAX showings.

"Star Trek," which reveals the back stories of Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, is an unusual blockbuster that pleased critics, too, receiving 96 percent positive reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes Web site.

"Last year 'The Dark Knight' and 'Iron Man' both were embraced by critics as incredible filmmaking as well as big action-adventure movies. This one has been even better reviewed," said Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore. "You look at the level of critical response and the audience reaction, we definitely feel like the movie is set to play into Memorial Day and into the summer."

Moore said he expected the movie, which had a $140 million budget, should gross over $200 million total this summer, even with competition like "Terminator: Salvation" coming on May 21 and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" arriving in theaters July 15.

Abrams got it right, he said, by appealing to both hardcore "Star Trek" fans as well as moviegoers who may not have been familiar with the 1960s television series and the many movies and TV spin-offs it spawned. It stars Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, and features an appearance by Leonard Nimoy as an older version of the half-Vulcan, half-human Spock.

"It just shows you how talented he is and what a great movie he made," Moore said.

"Star Trek" also beat the $6.3 million record "The Dark Knight" set in its opening weekend on IMAX screens last year.

"The DNA of this movie and the DNA of the `Star Trek' franchise work perfectly together and are very much a complement to what IMAX has accomplished," said Greg Foster, chairman and president of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "IMAX was a company that had a sort of older-school, older-fashioned approach to things and we hipped it up and reinvented ourselves, if you will. That's precisely what J.J. Abrams and Paramount did with 'Star Trek."'

The fact that the "Star Trek" haul improved from $26.8 million on Friday to $27.4 million on Saturday is a good sign, said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

"Sometimes you will see a movie drop big-time," Dergarabedian said. "What this 'Star Trek' is going to have is legs, a rare commodity in this world where every week there's a new blockbuster."

As expected, last week's top film, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," came in at No. 2 with $27 million. The prequel to the "X-Men" franchise, starring Hugh Jackman as the mutant who slices and dices his enemies with his metal claws, has made nearly $129.6 million in two weeks.

"It's the same weekend drop as ('X-Men: The Last Stand'), the last one. That tends to be what fan-based movies do," said Chris Aronson, senior vice president of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox. "To have $130 million in the first 10 days is sensational. We think we withstood the attack of 'Star Trek,' if you will, and will settle into a long, successful run."

The week's other new wide release, the stoner comedy "Next Day Air," came in at sixth place with $4 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

Not a fan of ST, never was, avoided it with a passion because of people like Self Cleaning Duck (that is why you all have the reputation you do, incidentally.  I can't believe you disliked the movie that much).  Because they had a young pretty cast and they made the trailer look exciting, I HAD to see this movie and I'm glad I did.  It was a very fun movie.  I really enjoyed it.  I wasn't prepared for the death toll, but, I'm sure all Star Trek fans saw it coming.  If you are going to see the movie, go because you want to have a good time at the movies.  ...I can't wait for it to be riffed, but, it was a fun movie.

Wow that is pretty funny Duck.  Do you think weightlessness in space is due to a lack of gravity?  Or could it be falling towards the planet due to gravity?  You probably just mistyped and I should shut up.

Anyways I am not a Star Trek fan and my only exposure are a few random original series episodes I've seen over time when I've been bored or as a kid and then the Star Trek movies that have been riffed (And I've only seen them riffed).  Overall I got to say I don't think Star Trek's horrible, I just find it really boring.  Star Wars and other Scifi have adventure that gets you excited in the story.  Not that Star Trek doesn't have adventures buts its always so "serious".  I don't know, its difficult to describe.  I just plain can't get into it.

I have now seen the new movie twice and HOLY #^@% this is one of the best damn movies that have come out in years.  JUST WOW!  The effects are just incredible and its not like the effects are the whole movie either.  Probably the best part is the characters and I got to say, I like the new Kirk.  I like the new Kirk waaaay better than the old Kirk.  Blasphemy towards Star Trek fans I know but I just got to be honest.  Hopefully nobody tells me I have tiny genitalia and the IQ of a goat for having this opinion.

Only negative is .  What the hell is that?  I've seen enough original Star Trek to know that was definitely out of place.  It wasn't even set up either and takes you totally by surprise.  Not in the good way either.  Illogical!!!

I give this movie 10/10 and stick it up with the top 10 Scifi movies ever made.  Yes its that good.  This film has definitely got me interested in Star Trek where I wasn't before and I'm probably going to start looking into the old episodes.  This is the first movie ever where I actually agree with the rottentomatoes rating which is at 95% I think.  I usually hate that site with a passion because they seem to always have the opposite ratings to what I would give.

To me, you can't hate this movie without going into it with a prejudice where you're actually looking for what could be wrong with it.  You expect me to believe that all those things you mention Duck were just casual observations you made while trying to watch the film and not things you were making sure to make a mental note of so you can bitch about later?[/list]
