I like it when people have to explain what an object is, and how it functions rather than just use it.  Then offers an explanation to another character about what it is, only to be rebuffed with a "I know what it is!" type statement.

Is to help the terminally dumb, or just make people feel better about themselves?

Rufus T

"This ship is going to sink?!" Not an actual line from Titanic but I would've loved it if someone had said it.
Aaahh! This movie just throws you violently into the next scene!

Hobbit

"Soylent green is...people!"

Snakes on a Plane

I remember George Lucas, in audio commentaries, called some of those scenes 'pointer scenes.'  However, it only qualifies as a pointer scene (which is necessary in some movies) if it explains what the hero(es) must do to win.

"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.
Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

Along with that is phrases or terms that someone in the movie doesn't know, so after it gets used the other characters explain them for benefit of the audience.

Best example I can come up with ATM is from the Matrix.

Tank: Power offline. EMP armed and ready.
Neo: EMP?
Trinity: Electromagnetic pulse. Disables any electrical system in the blast radius. It's the only weapon we have against the machines.
