Pak-Man

I've been saving this topic/observation for when I ranked FBI.. AGENT! :^)

Does anyone else think it's a really bad sign when the entire plot of the movie is spoken in utter disbelief by the main character at some point (Which usually gets used in the movie trailer?)

Of course there's

"The FBI wants to pay me to learn to surf!?"

The Santa Clause 2:
"I've gotta get MARRIED!?"

I'm sure we can all think of others. :^)

From Armageddon (God, I hate this movie):

Harry Stamper: What's your contingency plan?

Truman: Contingency plan?

Harry Stamper: Your backup plan. You gotta have some kind of backup plan, right?

Truman: No, we don't have a back up plan, this is, uh...

Harry Stamper: And this is the best that you....that the government, the U.S. government could come up with? I mean, you're NASA for crying out loud, you put a man on the moon, you're geniuses! You're the guys that're thinking shit up! I'm sure you got a team of men sitting around somewhere right now just thinking shit up and somebody backing them up! You're telling me you don't have a backup plan, that these eight boy scouts right here, that is the world's hope, that's what you're telling me?

Truman: Yeah.
That shocks my full military wear!

I think it's even more cheesy when it happens in tv shows, as a way of bringing the viewer up to speed with what's going on.  Like, say, a show that is going to fundamentally be a mystery, and it'll have say, two siblings on it, and in the first ten minutes, one will say something to the other like, "I know that since Mom died five years ago, you refused to believe it was suicide and have been looking for the real killer, but I really think its time you let this go and get a job, because I'm sick of supporting you and letting you live with me, my husband, and our two children, whom I also think you're starting to have a bad influence on."

Real people usually don't talk like that.  Usually.

In many movies, it's either:
Let me get this straight...
or
Are you trying to tell me that...
or
Okay, here's the deal...

...followed by the plot setup.

sarcasm_made_Easy

Are you trying to tell me that...

A man with knives on his fingers is trying to kill us in our dreams?????

Grillslinger

Oh! And, "Here's the deal..." or, "Here's the plan."

There's also a narrative trick I've learned through watching many, many, movies:

If someone goes over a plan thoroughly for the audience, then expect it to go wrong.  However, if they just cut to the plan, it'll go very smoothly.   ;D

Oh, and films about conning people ALWAYS con the audience, too.

Oh come theres NOOOOO way hollywood would dare be that predictable would it?
