The first one was lame at best.

A few good songs (a couple co-written by Leslie "It's My Party" Gore)...a couple of decent dance numbers.

Otherwise, it's a lot of set ups about this one's problem and that one's neurosis and no real resolution about much of it (unless it had to do with abortion).  Even Coco's "audition" you're sitting there thinking, "Okay you were even stupid enough not to turn around and leave after you had a look at the building. But, no one is holding a gun on you.  Get up and leave!"

Writer had certain ideas/stereotypes about young performers but didn't have the talent to tell a story.

We have the "High School Musical" crap to thank for this.
