I do mean at some point to get a region-free player, so maybe I'll look into that. I want The Comic Strip Presents on DVD, dammit.

Which ones are available?

All of them:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Comic-Strip-Presents-Complete-Collection/dp/B000QRI4BY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1238546818&sr=8-1

Reduced from £50 to £19? That's pretty good.

What if you just bought a Region (?) United Kingdom DVD player?

Doctor Who?

It would have a UK power plug, out put in PAL,and cost you about $60.

You can get a Philips DVD player that can easily be hack and will convert PAL to NTSC perfectly for $35.

Region 2.

You guys run off a different kind of electricity than we do, so you would need to get a transformer. It would probably be cheaper and easier to get a region free DVD player.

FINE

I can't believe no one's mentioned this, but I'm still waiting for Animaniacs volume 4, with all the remaining episodes from the show.  Why hasn't this come out yet?  And for completionists' sake, a DVD release of Wakko's Wish.  (Even though it's nowhere near as funny as the rest of the series, and the Warners are pretty out of character for most of the movie.)

Wow, Saudi Arabia is Region 1?  Obama should check this map out before he gives presents out this year.

Oh, wait, that's just electricity.  Nevermind.

The wartime stuff must be tricky to put out.  I wonder if they release the ones featuring the Japanese, considering how blatantly racist it is.
At the time it was racist because at the time the Japanese were a respected and cultured people. But NOW... little did we know they'd become even more ridiculous and goofy than could even be exaggerated. I mean, they make pillows shaped liked arms and sexy robot girls. WTF, Japan.

As a current resident of Japan I have to comment.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA!

Example:  There is a movie coming out here based on a true story about a bunch of High School boys who blackmail their Teacher by refusing to play volleyball unless she show them her boobs.  And this movie is being aimed to an adolescent audience!

And if you don't believe me....http://jfilmpowwow.blogspot.com/2008/09/production-on-oppai-bare-boobs.html

Two things:

Coby makes an inexpensive DVD player that not only is region-free but plays PAL discs.  Amazon has them and CVS and Walgreens used to stock them.  Haven't been looking lately.

The wartime "banned" cartoons are mainly kept off the market because of the physical characteristics they give the Japanese as well as using terms that are unfortunate.  On the other hand, there's "Hitler's Children" which isn't that far off of what the Nazi's had in mind.

But if we're going to talk about Disney films that are MIA......Song of the South, dude!

Can't show any Black living in the South at the time as being happy in any way.

Doctor Who?

I'm sure there must have been at least one happy Black person living in  the south at some point before the 1970s.

mrbasehart

I think Song of the South is available in Japan, or somewhere like that.  Which makes it even more silly.

All of the "racially sensitive" stuff is available overseas.  Uncut Tom and Jerry cartoons, you name it.

I'm not thrilled about some of the images in these things.  The look of the character of "Inky" in Warner Bros. cartoons is awful and unfortunate.

On the other hand, if you put that out of your mind and make the character any other color, they are VERY funny cartoons.  And the humor is NOT based on the character's race.

Doctor Who?

If she lives in the jungle why does she have lipstick on?

daltysmilth

I don't think that's supposed to be lipstick.
