Pixar's Up: Is it only a matter of time before it becomes Dreamworks.

As a fan of Pixar, I am worried that the company is starting to fall into the trendy category of jokes wrapped inside of animation.  I recently say the trailer for Up and was bothered that it included too many "jokes" and had the quintessential "annoying kid".  Can't animation just tell a good story anymore?  Must we be subjected to Shrek genre?

I don't wish to seem snobby but I keep holding out that there will be another "The Iron Giant" flick that transcends the visual medium and engages the audience.

Perhaps I am a snob afterall

Personally, I think the trailer looks great.  I'll guess that the people behind the marketing for Up want to make sure that the rather odd premise of the movie doesn't put parents off of thinking that the movie's for kids, so the jokes are highlighted.

You know why they won't turn into Dreamworks? They're not beating us over the head with talking animals.  God, how I'm sick of that.

WALL-E was great, I'm not sure what you're worried about.  You might want to actually watch Up before you judge too harshly.

Wall-E was great.  My b-friend does animations on Disney DVD's and has heard some rumors about style changes.  I am just concerned that the current trend in animation might create a bunch of crap flicks.  I am not saying that Up will suck.  I'm saying that using all the cliched stuff in the trailers has me worried.

My brother and I were talking recently about how, one of these days, Pixar's gonna make a mediocre movie. It just has to happen, statistically. And every time a teaser for the next one comes out, we think that time has arrived. "Really? A movie about fish? A superhero comedy? A robot who falls in love? Really?"

And yet, each time, they continue to blow us away. Which will only make their first mediocre film all the more disappointing. :P

(I realize some people found "Cars" to be mediocre, but screw you, I adored it. Of course, I'm a sucker for small middle-of-nowhere town stories.)

The good thing about Pixar is they can take all the usual genre elements and cliches and make something wonderful out of them.

It's a movie so devoid of story that the best title they could muster was, "Up." What did you expect?

Oh, so you've seen it?  You must have some good insider connections.....

No he's just Bratpop.

He hates everyone and everything, don't bother getting upset or trying to debate him.

I have only seen the teaser but I think it looks interesting and beside Pixar hasn't let me down yet.

I watched the extended trailer for this and I think it looks promising!

The villain kind of reminded me of the villain in The Rescuers Down Under which I think was one of Disney's scariest villains!

Oh, and mrbasehart, sorry to burst your bubble but they do have a talking animal.  Although they are not anthropomorphized (for the life of me I can't pronounce this word!) but rather their thoughts are translated by a collar.  I laughed my ass off when he accidentally switched it to Japanese!

And as far as plot goes.  How much do you need in a "buddy road-trip comedy adventure" which is pretty much what this is, just tailored to kids.

I think that's what Pixar does best though.  They take classic ideas and execute them perfectly and uniquely.  It's not cliche if you do it right.

THE QUEEN!!!

Let's remember that Pixar knows how to sell things. What brings people to animation? Cheap jokes. So they put them in the trailers, i.e. WALL-E's bra bit. But then the films are fantastic. Every trailer of theirs is cheezy cheap jokes. So I'm not worried.

Ehn, that sounds different enough.  It's the ones that act like humans I can't stand.  Fuck Shrek and his fucking Donkey.  :)

Yeah i remeber not looking forward to Monsters Inc because I thought it was just going to be Billy Crystal and John Goodman yelling at eachother for any hour and a half, now it's one of my favorite.

Pak-Man

Other than The Incredibles, every movie Pixar has ever done had me thinking before I saw it, "Well that can't be any good.." I'll continue to watch their movies in blind faith until such time as I am disapointed by one of them. :^)

I think the problem is I can't get past the assumption that Pixar would treat a story like any other animation studio would. Pixar's always got a great angle.
