I remember a friend and I used to talk about Parts: The Clonus Horror, and he was convinced if it was done with a bigger budget, the movie would be better. I didn't ever fully agree with him (and still don't), but to be fair, it did have at least an inkling of what could have proved a far more exciting, interesting story, but a lot of how it was written was simply stilted, and the acting was frighteningly wooden, and so on.

The Island comes into being. A blatant rip-off, of course, everyone knows that; it was not a 'remake' only in that the creators of Clonus, as I recall, were never contacted about it. Apparently Michael Bay agreed with my friend that this idea could be a good movie. And perhaps it could be. ...But it's Michael Bay. We call it a draw, because I can't say a well-budgeted remake of Clonus wouldn't be a good movie, necessarily, but I would stipulate the director need be at least vaguely competent at anything he ever does. We actually rented it on DVD once and watched the commentary by Bay. It's amazing how far up his own ass this freak has managed to lodge his head.
