Besides war movies like ("Tora, Tora, Tora"), he appeared in Westerns ("The Last Frontier," "Chato's Land"), musicals ("Kiss Me Kate," "Oklahoma!"), science fiction ("Planet of the Apes," "Them"), dramas ("The Asphalt Jungle," "The Shawshank Redemption") and comedies ("Mr. O'Malley and Mrs. Malone," "The Great Diamond Robbery.")

I wanted to go watch his Twilight Zone episode - "On Thursday We Leave For Home"  - and The Relic after I heard this...

Whitmore was a guest on that TV show, "T.H.E. Cat"!

His character was always my favorite part of The Shawshank Redemption.  May he rest in peace.

[Trumpysgirl]

He was the essential Grandfather-like stock character. I'll miss seeing his work.

Also did a great "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" in Kiss Me Kate as well...
