just figured i would mention i got the complete real ghostbusters set it is totally awesome and absolutely crazy that so much love has been put into this old cartoon.  if anyone out there has fond memories of the show i highly suggest coughing up the cash for this one.  really cool steel book packaging and still fits on the shelf perfectly

thats a upclose look at the boxset that shows of all the details perhaps in too much detail.  anyways the set is da bomb!

I hate big dumb sets, but I'm potentially interested in this. I'd like to see them release it in season-by-season format so I don't have to blow a huge chunk of money at once, and so I don't have to have that big stupid collector's tin that I'll just store somewhere.

but its not in a a tin thats anohter reason its so awesome.  it only takes up the space of 5 regular dvd cases.  fits perfectly on the shelf

You WANT to go back to the more expensive season by season - or worse the season (whatever) : volume 1 - DVD releases?!?!?!?!?

Especially the shows that are only one or two seasons.  I mean "The Invaders" season 1 came out in this summer now season two is coming out January - meaning there was no doubt they were going to release both.  WTF?  Why?  So you can charge $30 twice is all I can figure.  Just release the whole thing at once!

Rattrap007

also forgot my Get Smart entire series collection. Comes in a box that looks like a phone booth from the opening...

The pictures I saw had it in a big goofy replica of the fire station.
check out the video the early mock up pictures were not a  good representation.  it is a exteremely compact set. i challenge anyone to find a commercial set with 25 discs that fits in as small a space and isnt one of those crappy cases where it is just a spindle with all the discs stacked on top of eachother.

I'd say the coolest (and biggest) set I own is the first volume set to the Work of Director series (Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, Michel Gondry):

I wanna say this is my cooler dvd set based on its disproportional awesomeness-to-obscurity ratio:

This, though, really makes it a three way tie (and this is also my most watched dvds):

Finally, this is what I'm asking for for Christmas, so I may own these before the month is over:
and

I used to own the LOTR box sets (sans slipcover) and Simpsons seasons.  I also have a bootlegged "Real Ghostbusters" Season 1 dvd I got off eBay, so that complete series box set looks amazing to me.  But really, that not-necessarily-for-kids first season is fine by itself.  Holds up surprisingly well.

Because for a relatively small outlay, I can get a season and see if I actually WATCH it.  It's one thing to say "oh man that show was great, I want to see it" and then find yourself owning it but never looking at it.  I have had this happen.  So...yeah.

I can understand that.  However, in that case, there's eBay or Amazon Marketplace or Craig's List.  Someone will take it off your hands.

But what's happened to me for example is MGM releases "Poltergeist: The Legacy" Season 1 - which fans know is a decent season but not when they got really good.  Not enough fans bought it - either for that reason or because they were waiting to see if MGM was going to release the rest before they invested in it - so MGM hasn't released another season since.  They needed to release the whole thing at once.

I've got no problem with them releasing the whole thing at once...as long as they let me get bits and pieces of it too.
That sounds good....release it as a "Whole Series" first and THEN season by season.  Much better.

I just purchased the Month Python's flying circus collector's edition megaset. There's like 30 discs in the set.

From what I've read that's because...

  • The set includes the "Personal Best" discs of each member that are made up of the skits that are on the regular discs anyway and nothing else
  • The two new items never seen before come on their own disc each when they could have both fit on one disc

But definately enjoy....how can you not with Python?

gojikranz

ya that set is totally over blown but i think its still cheaper than the previous set so definately pick it up over any other version.  there is some new stuff on the personal best discs shot recently with the lads.

As for Box Sets in General:

Actually, I'd have to say the CRAZIEST one's I have are the Star Trek TNG Season Box sets. Y'know these ones:

These things have been out for ages and yet everywhere I find them, they can cost up to £80. Fortunately for me, I managed to find Seasons 3, 5, 6 & 7 for £20 each Secondhand, meaning I got Four Seasons for the Price of One.

MrTorso

I like your version of the X-Files set better than the one we have here in the States....
