I'll give you Usual Suspects (but not X-2). But one (or even two) good movies does not a great director make. :)

Agree to disagree on both counts then I suppose

"Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" was terrible for a Coen film.

Must be the Clooney effect, I even liked Hudsucker Proxy but Cloonified OBWAT was cornball and significantly less entertaining than any of the others

I liked the movie. Perhaps IMO should be put in parentheses in the thread title.
Killing me won't bring back your Goddamned honey!

I loved O Brother too.  The only Coen Bros movie I haven't vared for so far is No Country for Old Men.

My hatred of Clooney probably spoiled it for me. I'm sure I'll dislike their new film with him just as much, I just haven't seen it.

Headbob headbob (smirk). Clooney.

Trumpysgirl

I can't say I'm a Clooney fan either, but I loved his character in O Brother Where Art Thou.

"Damn! We're in a tight spot!"
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

Really?  He's one of the VERY few actors who's movies I'll happily go and see no matter what.

That's the same for me, I always love seeing him. He's a constant in the acting world, in my opinion (just like Clive Owen).

Incidentally, I've yet to see a Coen film that I didn't love (of course, I've only seen half their stuff, but still... they're doing well so far).

I always think that should be assumed. Few of us here are expressing anything that should be taken as more than personal opinion.  :)

I always found The Usual Suspects as more of an exercise in film making than an interesting movie in of itself.

Interesting.  I never thought of it in that light but now that I have, that's a really good way of putting it.  Even though it wasn't his first movie as director, it definitely has a lookit what I can do feel to it.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

The Coen Brothers are good filmmakers, but they don't have anything spectacular enough under their belt to be called "great." The Man Who Wasn't There sucked. Blood Simple sucks. Their comedies are more quirky than funny. Fargo isn't that great. Old Men is okay, but ultimately unsatisfying and convoluted.

And The Usual Suspects is one of the most overrated movies of all time. It's like a movie M. Night would make if he made "good" movies. But ideally, if all movies were good or great, this would be a bottom-of-the-barrel cheesy movie. It's only drooled over because most movies suck. And who even saw Apt. Pupil?

Claude

Miller's Crossing and Barton Fink put them over the top into the "great" ballpark.

ScottotD

Death Proof falls into this category for me.

I disagree with all of the above.

...so, the Coen Brothers are bad filmmakers and all of their films are great? :P

No. The Coen Bros. are bad filmmakers and all of their films suck, except for Blood Simple and Fargo. Of course, that is all IMO. Still, I defy anyone to try to make it through The Man Who Wasn't There. What a bloody awful movie.
