Not at all sorry, for those who don't "get" Pollock, he has indeed failed to communicate.

It is not incumbent upon the viewer to work to "get" the output of an artist.

If something isn't art to one person, that doesn't mean that it isn't art to another.
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

For about a year I was dating a Research Marketing Manager for a major corporation. I was surprised to what degree they have what you guys are talking about down to a (nearly) exact science.

For the record, I don't get Pollack either. But I'm not going to tell people that it isn't art.

That's as may be. But look at MST. They took (would could be perceived) bad art and turned it into something great.

See I don't mind Pollock, I think it's pretty, but really if you don't get it it's not your fault.

And just because you don't "get" the same thing out of art that someone else "gets" it doesn't mean anyone is wrong.  Art is what the individual brings to it - their outlook, their experience and what emotions the piece brings out in them.

Tripe

Absolutly. The fundamental point is, nobody has to "get" anything out of art.

I don't know, though, does Bryan Singer really count as "great?"

Usual Suspects and X-Men 2 are both at least great in my opinion.

Agreed, especially on Usual Suspects.

Did nobody actually see "Pollock"? Because based on that, it would appear he didn't even know if his art was "art," let alone have anything there to "get." This is how I prefer to view most artists. They're not trying to make a point, they're trying to make a painting. Any film director who complains that people just didn't "get" his movie is not a good filmmaker. This is why I respect David Lynch. Even if his movies are terrible, he doesn't expect people to "get" them or make excuses when they don't work.

Chaos

I'll give you Usual Suspects (but not X-2). But one (or even two) good movies does not a great director make. :)

Yeah,  I won't go with great.  Maybe something along the lines of competent or good.  Definitely more than just merely workmanlike because there are flashes of real style, especially in The Usual Suspects and Apt Pupil.
