Wait, who's Lear? Anthony Hopkins or Ian McKellan or something like that? Man... Get ready to experience their flapping todgers!

Tripe

Hopkins.

I liked Patrick Stewart's; his Texan accent was delightful ;)

Stewart's Lear? Or his flapping todger? :)

Tripe

Why the latter of course; not only was it flapping, it had a delightful Texan accent, that sort of talent you rarely see in a todger.

Sounds good to me (and yes, I've both seen and loved the movie) I lreally like Will Smith and think Spielberg can bring some AI or Munich-style coldness into it.

I think it could be good, but the backdrop in OldBoy added a certain something that I don't think could e replicated in an American film.  Not that a remake wouldn't be good...

Frankly, I really like this movie and it wasn't nearly as intense, viscerally speaking, as I thought it was going to be, but it was much more engrossing than I expected.

I think if they film it with that kind of sickly green/blue photo filter they did with the Ring, it will feel like some of the original atmosphere.

Good god, this sounds horrifying.

What was Spielberg trying to accomplish here? I mean, he couldn't possibly recreate the original Oldboy's tension and atmosphere. Especially not if he's aiming for a big audience.

Chances are that this will be a spayed and neutered PG-13 version meant specifically to try and bring in people who would balk at the original.
With some of the twisted crap vital to Oldboy's plot, that would be like making Alien without any alien.

ScottotD

...and how is that horrifying?

That it warranted a ScottH response is horrifying enough.

This is about as good idea as when they announced the remake of Wickerman.

Not to sound like a downer.. but wasn't there some kid who went on a homicidal rampage imitating this movie in some way?... It seems like the only reason Spielberg is even thinking about this is the sheer controversy... I wouldn't be surprised if he squeezed in an alien or two into the story...

A kid who killed some people had a photo of himself holding a hammer on his Myspace or something... certain media outlets made an unsurprisingly stupid leap and linked that to Oldboy.

Well, there are always a few psychos out there looking for answers or ideas where they shouldn't.  At least it's not anime this time, as I've heard of both Evangelion and Death Note inspired murders.  Frankly, I don't think Speilberg or Smith are interested in courting controversy for ticket sales as both are huge box office draws.
