I'm not even sure they originally planned to release the 3-riffer version, except they were performing it live and people demanded it on the forums.

Well they didn't redo Over the Top so I doubt the forum had anything to do with it.

I haven't seen any calling for a re-doing of Over The Top.

Not only that, but isn't Plan 9 on the not-selling-all-that-well list?

(I went looking for that list but couldn't find it, but I'm pretty sure that is the case)
FINE

I'm just a fan of originality, and redoing something like this just seems to lose it's.. 'originality zing'  that it had :-\

Same here.  I'd be just as against the idea of Mike, Kevin, and Bill deciding to riff a movie that they already did on MST3K.

Yeah, or do a "Three Riffer" version of something Mike already did by himself.... how lame.

If you actually read my previous posts (Obviously you didn't) you would have already seen why I feel that this is a different situation.
Imrahil: Don't care about Riding with Death.

Bob: Turkey.

Action Batch:  Woah, let's all mellow out and rap about this.

I'm pretty sure you're right.  I think the whole thing was a matter of people on the forum hearing about the live riffs and going nuts thinking we were missing something.  They decided to humor us, and the result was mixed up with complaints of repeated material and low sales compared to the newer riffs.

Yeah, I went back to the Plan 9 board to refresh my memory a bit, and I was pretty harsh on the guys for all the repeated material..

I feel a bit guilty now.. :-[

I think Plan 9 has been pretty popular as Video on Demand, which just speaks even more to the movie availability (ie, being on your shelves) being a key issue.

The two situations don't even compare.

While I agree it wasn't their best, SCCTM was considered a classic episode of a huge cult television series that just about every fan saw. I can't help but feel that part of the reason for this retread is the lack of public domain Christmas stuff. That's like if ten years from now, Penn & Teller released an episode of Bullshit on Creationism that had the exact same content and interviews, but with new cut away jokes.

The original Plan 9 commentary was on an obscure DVD that only devote fans really listened to and that was developed before Rifftrax came into exsistance, and was redone because it could now reach a larger audience and Kevin & Bill were online. That's like if the Creationism episode started as a five-minute Penn & Teller video on Youtube before Bullshit was even pitched, and then expanded and improved on when the show hit television.

Surely there was another PD Christmas movie they could have gotten?

Just off a quick archive.org search, here's one they could have gotten

After what everyone went through with Godzilla vs Megalon - which was PD when they riffed it and then Toho got the rights back - I wouldn't risk any film that the original owner is in a position to grab it back (like Fox) if I were them.

The makers of SCCTM are probably so out of the running on that it's not funny.

I'm interested in seeing a riff of the WHOLE movie after all these years.  My only question is what will a showing of this be without "A Patrick Swayze Christmas" and "A Child's Christmas in Space"?   :-\

Speaking of Xmas-riffing!  Hopefully, Mike and co. will come up with something as cool as last year's Xmas present to all of us.   :)

The SW Holiday Special will forever be the greatest thing I'll ever witness from MST3K/RiffTrax/CT.

I'll forever be in debt to Mike, Bill, and Kevin for that gift.

Now back on topic...again, I like this.

Changing the shadowrama again? I wish they would redo 'The oozing skull' with the new Shadowrama.
