As a side note, one character from the OT I would really like to see included and expanded upon is Governor Tarkin.  He could make a good red herring to distract from Palpatine.

QuoteAnakin is in retirement on Tattooine working as the freighter pilot that Luke will believe he was. Being removed from the core of the republic the clone wars are not as much of a concern, he is happy even in the relatively dull life he and Padme are leading.

Quoteot that A. has given up on his skills and abilities;  we see in his workshop that he has constructed a Lightsabre, yep the very same one that will one day be handed to Luke.

Is this when he begins practicing the Dark Side? Since he's basically freelance now, maybe he thinks he can find a balance between the two. Maybe this new insight on the force is how he discovers Vader's use of it because the other Jedi have not been trained to recognize it.

Actually, Tripe, if you wanna put down a sort of timeline, just to see how you see things going...

Yes, please. Out of all the OT characters, Tarkin is actually one of the few I'd love to see again.

Yep if there was one character to include, though i think we have to include Owen and Beru in some way if only to make the twin split work, would be Tarkin, but then I wanted Richard E. Grant to play him in the prequels and we didn't get to see him really.

He's a governor of a sector, it's possible he was once a PotR, one of the core group who brought Palpy to the position of Emperor.

Personally I've always envisioned Gary Oldman as a younger Tarkin.

If we make hints to the Death Star in these films, it needs to be Tarkin's baby and not made up by some space rock bugs to be stolen by Christopher Lee.

Oh yes that's great, like I said a while back A. has come to the conclusion that he can use the Dark side as much as the Light because he convinces himself he's only using it for good. Of course he's not, and Kenobi sees that but A. does not listen and feels vindicated when his dabbling reveals the true nature of Vader.

Ok I'm heading off to bed in a bit but I'll see what i can come up with vis a vis a spreadsheet in the morning.

American? I ask because my favoring of Grant is based partially on looks but a lot on voice, Grant just conveys the same upperclass reptilian nature that Cushing does in ANH. But yes Oldman could do it too, he'd simply not sound as good a fit to me :)

And I think  the idea of "Vader" as a separate character from Anakin is a bad one.

Why?

I totally agree.  Especially given his stubborn refusal to evacuate and his overconfidence in the battle station's invincibility.  Vader seems confident in it, just not that impressed and is very quick to scramble the fighters.

Well, the fact that it entirely destroys the impact of "I am your father" might have something to do with it.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

In their defense, I think they suggested this devise to keep the 'I am your Father' moment a shock.  While it certainly has it's pitfalls, the idea of Anakin and another individual by the name of Vader co-existing could be promising (after the abomination that was the prequels, I'm eager to hear any original ideas).  I'm certainly not fully on-board with the idea yet, but I'm interested to see where someone might take it.

Because you're rewriting the PREQUELS, not Return of the Jedi.

Well I can't speak for everyone but I was trying to come up with a way to have Anakin start using the name Vader without letting the audience know that it's him.  Saving that moment in Return of the Jedi.  Not saying that there is a new character who fathers Luke and rewriting those.

Fortis

well lets face it...there is absolutely no way that you can write prequels with Anakin as a major character...and not effect the impact of the "I am your father," line.

...the prequels ruined the impact that would have on anybody. I still remember being so shocked when I watched Empire Strikes Back in theaters and hearing that line.

But nobody else will ever hear that line with utter shock, unless they have lived under a rock for the past thirty years.

...so even though I still don't like the idea of a Vader separate from Anakin's character...I don't think it will make a difference if you guys do that...since the prequels already ruined that line.

Well, my friends wife didn't watch any of them until she was in her 20's and somehow she never knew what was going on.  We got into a discussion about how she'd never seen them and made her watch them one weekend.  She was really shocked at that moment and it was really cool to get to see someone see something like that for the first time.  Unless she's the best actress I've ever seen but I really don't think so.

I'm personally thinking of raising my kids in a prequel less existence until they are in their late teens like I was when the re-worked original trilogy came out.  I'm gonna make them suffer the same way I did.
