I'd much rather live in the Matrix, with the automatic weapons and the iPods and the Borats and the YouTubses. Though, I'd probably want to screw with the Matrix as much as possible, like flying around and dodging bullets and wearing cool shades.

I'm with kodiak, basically a bit of both really

Oh yes, I would definitely stay in the Matrix.  The real world sucks.

pre-war or post-war... that whole machines versus Zion conflict might affect my decision.

Beyond that however the real world is sweet. I've always wanted to learn kung-fu. 8)

I say reality is subjective anyway. Reality is just what our brains accept, whether you're in the Matrix or out of the Matrix. Ask a schitzophrenic.  To him/her, reality is their illusions.  Their illusion is just as real to them as anything is to us.  You can't convince them otherwise because they can see it, they can touch it.  Who is to say that how our brain is interpreting information is any more real than the way they are?  We generally just go by majority consensuses.  Our brains like to create "reality" to fill in the blanks around us, but is that really real?  I think if you believe it, it is to you.

I'd stay in the Matrix.  Why live in filth eating sludge?  Do they not have washing machines in Zion?!  There would be no sense in getting your family, those Matrix family ties aren't "real" in Zion.  They are part of the design in the Matrix.  By abandoning the Matrix, you're basically saying all those constructs are false so you have no family. You were cloned.  I dunno, I don't see why you should leave a perfectly good reality to go to an alternate one. "Truth" and "Freedom" are all relative too.  I don't think the people of Zion were all that free.  Knowing the truth that my life sucks and I live in ooze isn't that important to me, heh.

My friend and I were talking about the matrix once, and then it occured to us...What if I caught morpheus off-guard and ate BOTH pills? Would one cancel out the other, or would I just die?

The way they described the matrix works in the movie, it seemed to me that the machines should be able to make agents that ignore the matrix's boundries. The movie also implied that your mind makes the damage real. So effectively, couldn't you condition yourself not to accept it, and be unkillable in the martix. This would probably be too hard, because it looks like the matrix plays on human's natural genetic instincts. To become immortal in the matrix, you'd have to be able to completely expunge your instincts. (the urge to reproduce, the fear of high places, the body's reflexive action it uses when it responds to pain.) stuff like that.

I would stay in the matrix, mainly because I'd live just as long as I would if I were unplugged. It also sounds like if we WERE somehow able to take back our world, we would be too fargone to change it back to the way it was.

I feel sorry for the poor dope who believes the world REALLY IS a matrix, and somehow is convinced that its okay to kill security guards and government agents. Kinda reminds me of the one guy (in chicago I think) who REALLY thought he was Blade. He injured several people with a sword and was eventually taken down by a bean-bag bullet to the crotch.

That's a special kind of justice that proves God to me. :^)

So basically, become insane.  In the matrix, power is measured in heaps of bat shit.

One of the things that irked me about the sequels to the Matrix were the fact that now Neo knows he's the one, the only thing he seems to be able to do is fly.  At the end of the Matrix, he's directly able to manipulate code, and yet all that power has gone.  He doesn't even bend any bloody spoons!

Well, he does save Trinity by taking the bullet out of her in Reloaded. And in Revolutions, after he's physically blinded, he's able to see psychically (or whatever that was), so I guess those count as "the one" powers. I was actually figuring you'd argue like some others that he became too powerful, so the last two films felt like watching a videogame played with a "god" cheat. Personally, although I think the first movie was better, the last two were still good action movies.

Asfor whether I'd stay in the Matrix . . . I'd like to say I wouldn't, but I'm just not too sure if that's the truth or not. Now if I you happened to catch me on a really bad day, I might be more likely to say "screw it" and opt for the real world. There are definitely days where an alternate reality would've been very acceptable . . . however filled with fluids and holes it might be.

I dunno... The Matrix always seemed to be copying off of Overdrawn At The Memory Bank. (MSTies)

Hmm...whenever I face a philosophical quandry such as this one, I ask myself...what would Yakov Smirnoff think?

The answer is so easy that you don't even have to read the spoiler:

You mean I'm NOT in the Matrix?  No wonder I can't bend and shape spoons with my mind!  DOH!

I imagine if Overdrawn At The Memory Bank was not a complete disaster, it would have resembled the Matrix in concept.  Now there is an MST3K classic.  I mainly watch it to annoy my wife who got me into MST3K. ;D

As for the question of this topic, I have this crazed sense of truth and justice that would not allow me to live in the Matrix if I knew of it.
