A spell was cast and the sky turned red.  The Angel's heart froze to ice.  Roses of blood from an innocent soul.  On the plain lies an Angel dead.

M83 - Saturdays=Youth

I've long been amazed by composers who can create an instrumental piece that is capable of instilling real sadness, fear, or joy in its listeners.  Anthony Gonzalez -- who is effectively M83 -- proved that he was a master of doing just that on Dead Cities, Red Seas, and Lost Ghosts, and its follow-up, Before the Dawn Heals Us, by stacking layer upon layer of synths to construct towering skyscrapers of emotion.  So I was a little bummed out when I heard that on his new album, he moved toward a more pedestrian, pop-oriented format.

I needn't have worried. On Saturdays=Youth, Gonzalez takes his textured, symphonic approach and applies it to '80s New Wave, and the result is marvelous.  Gonzalez digs out drum and synth patches that nobody has used in two decades, and somehow makes them sound fresh again.  If it sounds like he's cribbing his ideas from the likes of The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs, and OMD, that's because the album is a deliberate, nostalgic homage to that sadly bygone era.

This is the score to the greatest teen movie that John Hughes never made.  If you canonized the Pretty in Pink soundtrack as one of the finest compilations of all time, you will love this album.  Try out the spoilered video for Graveyard Girl, and see if I'm not right.

Nice...

I am always on the lookout for this to round out my Wendy O / Plasmatics collection:

It is supposed to have a nice Wendy O recipe for a salad dressing.

Mojo HD showed Reform School Girls in HIGH-DEF the other night. I couldn't believe it.
