My impression of Frank Miller so far has not been so great. The trailer for "The Spirit" however might have permanently changed my mind. I was very delighted and bemused by the inclusion of the music from the 1987 film "The Untouchables" during the bulk of the trailer. It seems pretty awesome to me even though there's a bare minimum of movie footage. Is this going to be a great movie? I guess we'll know at Christmas time, the time when the 3 spirits visit scrooge or whatever.

What's really impressed a lot of people about the last run of "The Sprit" was the fact that it had a strong female lead who was strong because she was compitent, not because she was crazy.

I guess we'll see what Miler can do with that.

However, in every other respect, I'd say the Spirit would be best handled in Frank's hands.

Except, you know, that he isn't making The Spirit at all, he's making Sin City again.

Don't know this female Spirit.  Are you sure you're not thinking of the Question?

Also, yeah, the Spirit, though Noir inspired should be more light-hearted and less Sin City.

Doktor Sleepless

Yeah Frank Miller sucks. I'll see the movie though.
Round about now! Since they say! I am the sexiest man in Jamaica!

I'm guessing based on your name your more a Warren Ellis fan, huh?

No, I was reffering to a female supporting character that was prominent in the book, not the Spirit himself.

That was my reaction too. I'd like to see a film of The Spirit, if they ever make one. Ah I'll probably still see it.

I saw the trailer for this at the Dark Knight previews....

it looks.... terrible.

I'm not the kind of comic book fan that has a giant hissy fit whenever something doesn't turn out the way I wanted - ...

I guess because Eisner's book "The Dreamer" inspired me to get into comic art and subsequently illustration... and actually the college that I chose... it was all influenced by that book and then the Spirit series.  Think I was 15.  But anyway, seeing Miller's take is just completely out of left field.

I have a theory about Miller; I think once he hit movies he became a dick.  He felt like he could make his own personal fantasy movies because he was a big shot and people would think he's arty and avante garde.

The Spirit isn't a sexy thriller with blue fog lights and huge titties bobbling all over the place.  To me, it's a sleek 40's film noir with a bit of quirk and Joan Crawford eyes.  From the trailer, it looks like all silly exposition.

Oh well.

Beautifully put.

And exactly what's wrong with that trailer.

Can you imagine if Frank Miller had directed The Dark Knight?  All the backgrounds would be pulpish CGI, there'd be T&A all over the place, and the movie would probably be called The Goddamn Batman.  Perish the thought!

...You know, I actually think I'd still love the movie.  Just for different reasons.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Ortega

hmm.  I actually liked Sin City, having read the books a couple years before, but i was not impressed by the trailer.  Miller's stlye was perfect for Sin CIty, but not someone else's work.

ANd unless i'm watching the wrong trailer, i didn't see the whole T&A thing people keep harping on.

Then again, i'm not well versed in internet discussions.  I'm kinda a pacifist when it comes to things like movies and such.

BBQ Platypus

Well, to be perfectly honest, I'm just assuming that there will be some T&A.  I mean, this is Frank Miller we're talking about.  The guy threw in a random sidestory featuring the Black Canary that had no bearing on the plot into All-Star Batman and Robin pretty much just for the sake of showing off her fishnet stockings.  Or so I've heard...

Well, the Spirit certainly has a menagerie of femme fatales.

Agreed whole heartedly.  I like a lot of Frank Miller's work but I also hate a lot of it too.  He's very talented, but a talented creator doesn't guarantee great art.
