Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs *Spoilers*

[Minnesota]

SO the 2nd Futurama movie is out (leaked on the net sometime last week / debuts in stores on the 24th)... what did you people think of it?

I absolutely loved the first Futurama film (perfect 10!) ... HOWEVER The Beast with a Billion Backs is a huge dissapointment. I give it a score of about a 7.4  The biggest problem with the film is the rehashed storylines and the creepy bisexual monster / girlfriend. There are several rip-offs of previous episodes: Bender getting jealous of fry not spending time with him (the dog episode), Kif and Amy spend time at a swamp -as usual kif is pretty annoying  (kif gets knocked up episode), pointless Stephen Hawking cameo (simpsons/futurama), Bender stalking / befriending / making enemies with Calculon (Bender not allowed on TV episode), the smell-a-scope, Wormstrom, etcetera. Overall the writting felt completely pieced together of old episode ideas.

As previously stated, the biggest problem with the film is the creepy main plot. Not that there is anything wrong with slut polygamist girlfriends, but when it comes to storylines... this one belongs more in the Kevin Smith universe than it does in the Futurama universe. Surprisingly, things get even weirder as the film gives us an image of Fry telling David Cross he loves him... WTF, did the writers forget the sweet Lela-falls-for-Lars (ie; Fry)-movie alltogether? Feel free to disagree with my opinion but the bisexual tentacle monster seems way out of place in the world of Futurama. Not to mention the 'two universes dating' jokes felt stale and unfunny.

Anyway, there is a couple of things that make the new film bearable. Number 1: its new Futurama!! and number 2: several gut busting laughs (albeit sporadic).
My favorite scenes / lines, "Will you be moved in with by me", The giant ant, 'whats going on here I was told there would be sugar syrup, Wormstrom throws Kawala through anomaly, 'arrives on the otherside completely unharmed' *flys through the window* hahaaha... some funny stuff.

Well, what did you'all think of the movie?

I thought it was as good as the first one, in that while Futurama can't sustain its 90 minute running time, it's still pretty good.  I also thought it had some terrific gags in it:

Zap accidentally killing, then eating, Kif was painfully funny.  Bender as Calculon's stalker didn't last long enough for me, especially when Bender started getting really creepy.  I actually enjoyed the universes dating thing, though I think I might've preferred it as the subplot to Bender's attempts to destroy humanity because Fry isn't hanging out with him.

The only bootleg I've been able to find is a streaming copy where the sound is about two seconds off-sync, so I'll just wait for the legitimate DVD release.

I liked it, but I don't think it was as good as the first one

I was also a bit disappointed by it, but likely because I was expecting so much from it that it couldn't possibly hold up to my expectations.  I was disappointed that the Zap/Leela/Amy subplot, them on the run as the last 3 normal beings on Earth, was too short.  They could have made an entire quarter of the movie with that subplot running.  Instead they give time to a mostly pointless robot revolution/pirate thing near the end.  The big problem was that the entire movie seemed to be all over the place.  It probably could have used a few more rewrites to tighten up the overall story and expand other areas (the before mentioned Zap subplot.)

But in the end it is still new Futurama and is still better than most of the television being made nowadays.
