I feel like that guy in your avatar now.. :gouge:

Like you've been impaled by a forklift and had your chainsaw wielding left arm chopped off by sheet metal? Damn, I'm even more sorry now  :scared: :( :( :(

Well, I came close to being impaled by a forklift a few times at my old employer, and I still have all my limbs luckily.. Does that count :-X

Hey guys, so about that whole "Make sure it's the Theatrical Release!" thing I've been tooting for the past week...welllll. It turns out that, through an error on my part, the guys actually riffed the Director's Cut. I'm extremely sorry for the mix up on this one.. Fortunately, the Director's cut is widely available and the product that we have linked to from the main page and that first link I posted earlier contains both versions, also those that have the Quadrilogy are still in decent shape.

So once again, the correct version is the Director's Cut which runs 116 minutes. And again, I offer my apologies for any inconveniences this causes, definitely not my proudest or most professional moment...feel free to call for my blood/soul/head/any other scary mortal coil-shaking-free-of obscenities that you so choose.

My 20th Anniversary Edition DVD has a run time of 116, so it looks like I'm in good shape. Thanks for the update, Thrashalla.

Ah, those fun and crazy multiple DVD releases.

Just to confirm and beat that dead horse a few more times, the 20th anniversary edition will work?

Thanks.

Sadly, I don't think so...I don't have it, so I can't say for sure, but iof it was produced before 2003, it doesn't have the director's cut. I believe that the 20th anniversary has the scenes from the Director's Cut, but only as bonus footage...not actually cut into the film.

I think you are correct.   The fact that it is called the "20th Anniversary Cut" and references neither the theatrical or the director's cut (which by now I understand came out AFTER the 20th anniversary cut) means that the Netflix copy I have coming tomorrow will do me just fine!

Thanks for the clarification.

And really Hollywood-Guys-In-Suits, when you make special editions, make them RADICALLY different in run times, not 7 seconds to confuse all.

Conor

Well, evidently, even though the actual run times of the two cuts are only slightly different, the directors cut has little tweaks and re edits throughout the whole thing, in addition to the six minutes of new footage.  So unlike The Matrix, or Saw, where the different cuts were just a few seconds missing or added in, making it in theory very easy to resynch if it got off, Alien seems like it would be maddeningly frustrating, if not impossible.

CHF01

Well, I'll pick up the Alien RT once it's released, queue the project up for DVD reauthor and see how well my 116 minute Alien release matches the DA sync lines. Once I have that determined, I'll post my results here.

gojikranz

ok well if its the directors cut then you have to either buy the alien quadrilogy or the two disc special edition of alien.  the directors cut is a bit shorter but ads in a bunch of different scenes so if you get the theatrical version it will likely be impossibel to sync up.

My Alien 20th Anniversary Edition DVD was released in 1999. Running time: 116 minutes. Nowhere on the DVD box or liner notes does it mention the word theatrical or director 'cut'.  ???

Unfortunately, this means it will not work with the Riff.  You need the directors cut, which was released in 2003.  Yours doesn't mention "theatrical" because it did not need specifying, as it was the only version available then.

My copy of Alien hasn't arrived yet AND we have to wait until the 18th for the next game.  Thanksgiving is ruined!

The copy I have is from 2003, but I tossed the box a long while ago (I album all the movies) so I'm not sure. :\

I'm assuming that because the menu doesn't give me any sort of choice in playing the movie (no mention of either) then it's NOT the Director's Cut.

Isn't the theatrical release on any Aliens DVD ever produced? If so, why wouldn't they make the rifftrax more compatible by riffing the theatrical version instead?

JackTheRIFFER

Damn you Rifftrax!!  Because of you I had to run around town looking for a version of Alien, a movie which I already own!  Then when I found it, I had to shell out 20 bucks!  You better really make with the funny this time!

It's a conspiracy I tell you!  (or maybe I just watched the Xfiles riff to many times!)    :grr:
