Cannot get DVD video or audio to work

I have labored over this issue for quite some time and am at wit's end. We have RiffTrax Player 1.1.1.6 on a computer with system specs posted at the bottom of this message. The only Riff we have purchased so far is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Out Harry Potter DVD plays fine in Windows Media Player, CyberLink PowerDVD, and inside the Vista Windows Media Center UI.

However, in the RiffTrax Player, we get any number of serious problems, depending on which audio/video codecs we use.

  • The sytem default codecs for both audio and video are Microsoft's. In RiffTrax player, using the defaults, the picture is a jumbled mess of green blocks, and the audio plays at twice the speed, clicking as it skips every other 1/4 second of sound.
  • If we use any of the Sonic or Cyberlink audio codecs, we typically don't hear any DVD audio at all. We can hear the RiffTrax fine.
  • The free AC3Filter AC3 Codec seems to work okay (but output is extremely quiet).
  • If I use any other video codec, the video becomes an extemely slow slideshow. It displays a frame every 10-15 seconds or so, and DVD menus are not navigable.

Here's something weird: If I fully uninstall the player, then reinstall the downloaded player from the site (which is still 1.1.1.15), and then follow the auto-update process to 1.1.1.16, I can get RiffTrax to work ONCE. Two times, after a fresh install/update of the player only, I have actually gotten DVD video and riff/DVD audio all to work at the same time. But if I stop playing then attempt to play again, it will not work ever again, until I fully re-install the product.

Which codecs should I be using, and how can I get this thinger to work? We'll happily buy more trax if we can get 'em working.

System info follows:
- Computer: Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop
- OS: Vista Ultimate RTM
- CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 6600
- RAM: 3GB
- Video: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 256MB
- DirectX: version 10.0
- Installed Video Codecs: Microsoft MPEG-2 (default), Cyberlink Video/SP, Sonic MPEG-2, Sonic Cinemaster 4.1
- Installed Audio Codecs: Microsoft MPEG-1 (default), Cyberlink Audio, AC3Filter

This is a good, thorough first post.  When I can't get the player to work I just close the program and curse the gods.
Welcome to the board.  The customer service here is pretty great, so I'm sure someone will post something helpful for you soon.

Thanks. I should also note that we first tried RiffTrax on my wife's notebook, a ThinkPad R51, and got similar results. We had hoped that things would be better on our Media Center PC. RiffTrax was actually one of the reasons we bought the thing. :(

Haha, weird. I thought this thread got deleted, but it has apparently been moved out of the Technical Support board. I sent essentially the same text of my original post to the support email address on the main RiffTrax site, but have not received a response.
