I own a lot of Criterions.

Same here! The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp is a great film.  I've seen most of Powell and Pressburger's output and while perhaps it's not in the same company as their best films (Matter of Life & Death, Red Shoes, Black Narcissus) it's still great with a fantastic performance from Roger Livesy.
Thanks for reminding me, I wanted to put the Red Shoes on my Christmas list. Although I should probably watch Naked, which I got last Christmas, first. I hate that feeling of being obligated to watch something, though. It's why I never rent anything.

The Tick

the only 3 movies i can think of are
minority report
iron monkey
and
gattaca

their crap but i love em
Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.

davo

excalibur

aliens
terminator 1,2
orig star wars trilogy
matrix
hoosiers
rosencrantz & guildenstern are dead
princess bride
dark city
the passion of the christ
jesus of nazareth
fletch

uhh..a ton more.

my 'pretentious/indie movies i actually like' list:

citizen kane
casablanca
memento
touch of evil
pulp fiction
brick
usual suspects
la confidential

Famous Mortimer

Good call on Blade Runner. I made the correct call of not reading the book first, and the film is just magnificent. I went on a car journey with a few friends to a gig once in South Wales, and they pointed out to me Port Talbot, and the industrial vista that apparently gave Ridley Scott some of his ideas for how the world of Blade Runner should look.

Or if that was all my mates making it up, it looked awfully similar. Amazing film anyway.

I think I'm the only person I know who wasn't particularly a fan of Memento. It was decent and all, but it felt liked it relied too much on its gimmick to me.
Doubly so for the Usual Suspects. As Ebert pointed out,

Jinto

I think "best" is a fairly subjective term, however I'll agree some of those listed already are among my favorites as well: Lord of the Rings and original Star Wars trilogies, Indiana Jones 1 and 3, etc.

( Oh, and not to ruin anyone's fun, but shouldn't this thread, and the Worst Movies thread, really be under Movie Talk, and not Suggest-a-Trax. ??? )

fallnhorse

Best movie ever has to be "Bruce Campbell Vs. The Army Of Darkness". All the rifting has been done already. You just need to watch. lol. I really like that movie still.

I will go the favorite route, not best  since favorite implies opinion and best implies fact
Movies I can always satnd to watch again and entertain me everytime

Star Wars
Empire
Indy 1 and 3
Jaws
Dawn of the Dead (original, of course)
The Grail
Meaning of Life
Twister (great popcorn movie and if you live in the middle of tornado alley, it means so much more. Everytime there is a good thunderstorm rolling through or a tornado watch, I have to break this one out..which is quite often actually. We had a big storm that killed our power for over 24 hours this summer, broken trees all over etc... once we got power back BAM I was playing Twister!)
Armageddon (same idea, but I like to watch it everytime there is a killer meteor alert...)
Psychos in Love (you owe it to yourself to see this at least once!)
Evil Dead (any but 2 is my favorite)
Lost Skeleton of Cadavra
Friday the 13th part 6
Superman and Superman II

Grapes? I hate grapes, I can't stand grapes. I loathe grapes. All kinds of grapes. I hate green grapes and I hate purple grapes. I hate grapes with seeds, I hate grapes without seeds. I hate them peeled and nonpeeled. I hate them in bunches, one at a time and in small groups of twos and threes.

i can understand that. that's why it's in my "pretentious" category. so many of those arty movies are liked by people because critics tell them to like them.  i'm as happy watching escape from new york or final sacrifice as i am watching memento :)

Want to hear real movie nerd pretentiousness?

Citizen Kane isn't even the best movie Welles ever did. It's notably primarily for the visual and sound design tricks both Welles and Tolland added to the film maker's vocabulary, but as Welles and virtually every other major director has since built upon and improved upon nearly every aspect of it, it's now more notable as a cinematic landmark along the lines of Birth of a Nation than as an actual film. Certainly it's still watchable, and it's still good, but I'd run Touch of Evil over it as Welles best mainstream effort, and Othello or F for Fake (ok, that one might just be a personal favorite) over that for best overall.

And the greatest movie of all time is Lawrence of Arabia. Screw everyone who says otherwise.

The Lady from Shanghai is a pretty cool movie, too.

The shootout in the mirrorhouse scene is fantastic, but the 'movie star' shots of the female lead get on my nerves a little. It's still a great movie, though.
