Amazon.co.jp has it for just under $72 USD (at current exchange rates). Of course, there IS the expense of getting it over here to consider...

Planet Terror was my second favorite movie of last year (after No Country for Old Men in case you're interested) HOWEVER I'm torn about buying a box-set because I hated Death Proof..... guess it's lucky Robert kicks ass with DVD extras while Quentin sucks at it.

So, I've managed to catch the theatrical cut of Grindhouse on Starz several times this month. GodDAMN is it still great.

Anyone here with an HD DVR give any thought to recording it? Just asking...

There are numerous sites dedicated to sharing files between people who have already done just such a thing... a whole torrent of sites, in fact... :P

Yeah, yeah... unfortunately, I'm not seeing where anybody has seeded a recording of the HD broadcast.

Well, the filmmakers intended the films to look fucked up. True, they had the option to release the films without the filters, but, then again, the Coen brothers also had the option to release The Man Who Wasn't There in color:

(This is NOT colorized - the film was shot and edited in color and converted to black and white in post-production.)

Hardly the same concept.  The scratches and pops in the theatrical release was supposed to make the films look like it had been playing over and over and over again in some low-rent piece of crap theater. But for home consumption they should have dropped the 'theater" gimmicks. Home viewing will never be the same experience as the theater.

Should the studios leave the cigarette burns on DVD releases as well? That is how they are in the theaters after all.  How about those annoying as shit watermark dots that are constantly flashing through ALL films in theaters now?

Check out the new blu-ray releases(at least of Planet Terror)... They did what I wanted them to and have a version without all the pops and film scratches.  They even worded it  like the film was old and they found a fresh pristine copy.

The presentation of Death Proof on Blu-ray just proves that Tarantino at least wanted the film to look a certain way, even in high-definition. Kind of interesting comparison between the two directors' aesthetics.

Funnily enough, even though Rodriguez and Tarantino have made very specific choices regarding  their films, there are still idiots stomping up and down and continuing to believe that the double feature version is the only way they intended the films to be released, and that the Weinsteins are butchering Grindhouse to make a quick buck. ::)
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

A buddy & I just watched Planet Terror last night and holy crap did we love it.  Clearly a movie made by people who love movies and had a ton of fun with it.  I don't even really like horror movies all that much but I'm getting me a copy of this one for sure.

My living room was transmuted into a 1970s drive in for 2 hours, what more can one ask for?

I still disagree with the general concept. Only Quentin's movie was remotely similar to anything made in the 70s, and then only barely. Neither of them were a tribute to grindhouse movies, they were just shown like grindhouse movies. I don't understand the point of adding grain and cigarette burns and missing dialogue and missing scenes when the movies are clearly set in the present day. Cellphones abound. What does this mean? The movie fell through a time warp into the 70s and then sat around for a few decades before they released it with no restoration? I mean if it was a 70s movie being shown in the 70s then it would look new, not old. The whole thing was a half-assed experiment. If they kept anything, it was the aesthetic of making a cheap film that nobody cared about and making it quickly. But I mean, there never was a movie like Planet Terror. It doesn't make sense to pretend it's somehow nostalgic. If you saw that movie in the 70s, your head would have exploded.

ScottotD

I see Planet Terror (which to me is the better movie by FAR) as an 80's tribute, it clearly lifts themes, camera movement and even musical cues from Carpenter which I think Rodriguez says a few times in the commentery.  If that means it fits the theme or not is debateable I guess, I'm just happy to watch an awesome movie by one of my favourite directors paying tribute to another of my favourites.

I also don't see why they shouldn't be able to release their movie(s) the way they want them released, doule and triple pack DVDs are commonplace now so if the Weinsteins feel like a 'prettier and bite-sized' version will sell better they could just make it optional the same as you're able to choose theatrical release or director's cut on the Alien DVD.

I thought if they really wanted to do a tribute, they wouldn't have done impossible effects like machine-gun-leg using CGI. It sort of defeats the purpose of the low-budget homage if you suddenly have Jar-Jar show up in a scene. Also, some of the scenes don't even have grain. It's confusing. Like the second part of Death Proof. Suddenly, it's like a regular movie. And then for a second, it isn't. And then it is again. WTF.
