Dune should be two movies directed by Del Toro...   I can dream cant I?

Since everyone pretty much agrees that the book is too dense to boil down to a two hour movie, would it be possible to focus on just a certain part of the story to make it a nice tight two hour films.   Or would the fans of the book hate that?

So long as they don't do a 'mini-series' of the book like they did of Frank Herbert's DUNE on Sci-fi, I'd be interested in seeing it

Doctor Who?

I thought the Sci-Fi Mini-series was pretty good.

It was a huge improvement over the David Lynch version.

Maybe it's just me.. I'm set on the original version cause that's what I grew up watching

yeah, i'm a big fan of the books, and i do think The Sci-Fi miniseries is probably the best adaptation of the Dune saga.  It just unfortunate that the miniseries suffered from a low budget that hampered the story-telling.  But they got Paul, the Baron, Stilgar, and Jessica right, so i can't hate on it too much.

Doctor Who?

The biggest problem with Lynch's version is that it didn't have time, that is something the min-series had.

It's not perfect by any means but it's the best we have so far.

Who knows maybe a studio will make a Lord of the Rings type deal and we will get a series of Dune movies that are 3 hours each.

That or a Mini-series is the only way I can see doing Dune justice.

Yeah, I've actually got both the original version, extended version, and the SciFi mini series on DVD, but I always 'gravitate' back to the original 1984 versions. I'm not knocking the mini series (not too bad  ::) ).. It Did go further into detail, and the special effects were much better, but it just didn't capture me like the original did for some reason (maybe again; I grew up on the 1984 version) :P

Doctor Who?

I have the same problem with Star trek the Next generation.

Everyone keeps telling me how bad it is but I grew up with it so it is the one i watch the most.

Doctor Who?

Yeah but the rest of it is ok so i can overlook that.

I didn't like Chani's thick German accent in the miniseries, nor the fact that they kept calling her "Cheney".
Again, different strokes, because i hated Jurgen Prochnow's thick german accent when i played Duke Leto.

Figures that unlike Lynch, they would get all the pronunciations right, except for one of the main characters. I can't think of many languages where Chani would have a long "a" sound.

The thing for me about the book is that if it was really good enough on its own, it wouldn't have been a series. So they shouldn't try to make it again unless they're actually going to do sequels this time, because the first one doesn't really go anywhere. It's like having an origin story and ending the franchise. The first movie was supposed to have sequels, but they went bankrupt. The miniseries at least had one sequel, but even though it was better, it never got a special edition and they didn't do any more. How many times does Dune have to fail? It's a bad idea especially considering what's happening with the Narnia series. I mean, that's Lord of the Rings lite. This is, what, a thousand times slower and more serious than LOTR? As a director, I would rather put my resources to another, and bigger budget, mini-series instead of trying to remake something that's been made twice before. There wouldn't be any surprises in it for us, and we'd have to sit through two additional movies before getting new material.

Doctor Who?

As much as I know that you are most likely right there is a part of me that loves to remember that that was the type of thing that was being said before the first LOTR movie came out,I can't help hoping that I some point someone will get it right.

So if there is a new Dune movie I will be going to see it for that reason.

Well, nobody really screwed up LOTR before. Plus, Dune is not really fantasy apart from the sandworms. And that's just exaggerated zoology. There's not that much "wow" factor sci-fi in Dune. They don't even have weirding modules like in the movie.  So their spaceships and stuff are treated more matter-of-factly than Star Wars. It's all very much political, and I can't think of any war movies franchises or political franchises per se. Even though LOTR had war, at least they were at war with monsters. No, sadly the closest thing to Dune is the Star Wars prequels. So anybody that knew that and still wanted to make Dune should be hung, drawn and quartered. Oh granted, it's a million times better, but still not worth the financial risk for a studio.

I just want to see God Emperor now. I don't want to see a really, really, really long version of Dune, again. Unless they can somehow make it completely different in every way. And when I saw the mini-series, though I love it, I couldn't help wishing they'd kept some of the things I liked about the movie. So I still might not like a completely new movie version, if I think the original navigator was better, the original stillsuits, etc. And well, then of course there's always that old skeleton... CGI. It never looks good. And it's so cheap now that you can make a cheap Dune by using lots of CGI. And I think they'd want to save as much money as they can. So I'm wondering how they're thinking about this and how much they're willing to spend. More than the original? Less than the original but more than the series?

Kind of reviving this thread. Apparently, there have been some progress on possibly getting a greenlight for the remake.
