They're going to hire Uwe Boll, I just know it...  :'(

That could be interesting. Maybe they can get Tara Reid to play Gandalf. That would be the best movie ever.

Haha, that's the first thing I said when I broke the news to a mate at work.

The Hobbit! Starring:

Keanu Reeves as Bilbo Baggins!
Patrick Swayze as Gandalf The Grey!
Tom Cruise as Gollum!
Vin Diesel as Smaug!

Yeah, okay; even I'd pay money to see that.

I think we all know that Burt Reynolds has to be Gandalf. Swazye and Cruise can both be dwarves, to save on CGI, and we can switch in Schwarzenegger for Gollum.

Holy God, if that didn't start the apocalypse, I don't know what would.

Of course the theme song just HAS to be Leonard Nimoy's Ballad of Bilbo Baggins

I guess it would be exactly like Peter Jackson's films, then. ::)

That's really hard to believe (not that I'm doubting your sources)- Lord of the Rings was the biggest success New Line's ever had, I'd think they'd be giving Jackson everything short of their family members to keep it going.

Is the prequel just going to be stuff from the Silmarillion? Because from what I recall, there wasn't a lot of specific storytelling in there, just overall historical descriptions.
It doesn't SOUND like it's Silmarillion stuff. Yes those events take place before LOTR, but that's like saying The Battle of Troy took place before the Vietnam War. LONNNG stretch in between. But even if they try to pull something together to cover some other period of the third age, there really isn't a clear narrative. I really have a very bad feeling about this "Hobbit" and an even worse feeling about the other prequel.

By the way, speaking of prequels and the Silmarillion, I assume everybody knows about this?

I'm very much looking forward to seeing what Christopher has come up with.

As for a LOTR "prequel" besides The Hobbit, Why? (To make more mucho moolah, of course.) As "unfilmable" as the trilogy had always been considered, The Silmarillion would 100 times more difficult, as there's virtually no through-line plot. At least LOTR had getting the Ring to Mount Doom for a central story. Filming The Silmarillion would be like filming a European history textbook. I could maybe see The Hobbit as two films, though, especially if they were to spend a good chunk of time on Gandalf attending the White Council, which occurred entirely "off screen" in the book.
Obviously you couldn't possibly film the whole thing, but you could do a series of shorts- one where that guy cuts the gem from the crown of Mr. Pre-Sauron, and suchlike. Although I don't recall anything else with much of a plot besides that story, and it's pretty much the same plot as Lord of the Rings.

It's certainly possible to make a decent film based on The Silmarillion, but not without taking so many liberties that the "Where's Tom Bombadil?!" purists would scream bloody murder and only go to see the movie twice rather than a dozen times.

Hey this discussion is also going on at the LOTR board, and over there they found an article that suggests maybe PJ might still be on board...

no it's just MGM saying that the door isn't completely closed yet.

Now that Peter Jackson isn't involved I might actually be inclined to see this. Hopefully whoever mans the helm of this one won't suck all the charm and joy out of the original work. "The Hobbit" has a much lighter tone than LOTR and the movie will need to reflect that in order for me to like it.

P.S. I'm shocked the thread has made it this far without someone finding a way to bash George Lucas!
