On my XP desktop PC, the Rifftrax player has the captions on and I cant seem to turn them off. I select "none" for captions in the dvd menu, but it doesn't do anything. The captions do not appear when I play the movie with Windows Media Player. Anyone have any ideas?

I have the exact opposite problem - I can't get captions on RiffTrax player for any movie, no matter what I do.  They work fine on all other DVD software that I have.

I can't get captions to work for the life of me.  And I'd like to use them too.

There's got to be some software setting under the hood that is causing Rifftrax to decide whether or not to play captions. I've got a brand new LG DVD burner and it acts the same as my last one -- most discs automatically play subtitles no matter what I set in the disc menu.

I haven't dug too deeply into this but I've got a feeling its one of the decoders that controls this, not necessarily the Rifftrax player. I'm running WinXP by the way.

This happens for me using ffdshow for video playback. If you're using that, might try a different one, as I don't get that problem with others.

I've had this problem as well. I just figured out what was causing it though. I went into DVD settings/Codec properties and clicked on the video decoder (in my case Ulead DVD Video Decoder 2) and chose properties. I then unchecked enable subpicture and hit okay. After that the subtitles went away.

I suspect the people having trouble seeing subtitles could probably do the opposite and check that enable subpicture box.

This put me on the right path, anyway, though my precise situation is different.  I tried looking at the options for my selected Codec, which was (out of 3 options) "Nvidia Video Decoder."  Settings didn't include anything like "enable subpicture," though, so I tried switching (DVD Decoders/Custom System Codecs) to "Intervideo Decoder," which had no settable options at all.  Then the third available choice on my system, "Sonic Cinemaster @ DS Video Decoder."

This one didn't have any settable properties for its status as "Custom Video Decoder," but I noticed it also created a line called "Line 21 Decoder 2".  Line 21 is where subtitles for DVDs are stored.  Thus, selecting the Sonic codec resulted in success, and I now have subtitles!

Hmm, interesting correction to the above....
"Line 21" is actually closed captions, which are a distinct separate feed from subtitles.   Anyway, my monkeying around enabled both of them....
