People do make astromech droids, just a matter of time and money, but it's done.

A costly, and painstaking hobby, but a nice one nonetheless.

All right, so Tyrant's computer just stopped working entirely. It doesn't turn on at all.

The strange thing is, when you plug it in, it makes a sort of steady rattling noise. It gets a litle faster if you push the power button, but it never tries to turn on.

Does anyone know whether this is a bad power supply, or if it's indicative of a larger problem?

RVR II

You Nailed It: Power Supply is Bad!!

Go to Staples or office supply store (cause everything else is closed on Sunday probably).
$50.00 is the average for a 350 watt power supply. That should fix it.

Tyrant

Thanks RVR. I'm going to need a 480 watt supply. I found that I can get one for less than $40 after postage straight from the manufacturer's replacement parts center. As has been so often the case in my history with computers (ie: the problem being obvious in nature, but the machine still not working after said problem is fixed regardless), if it turns out to be something else and the new supply won't resurrect my machine, I'll be back on here whining.  :P

Yep, I recently replaced the case fan in my computer because it was making a god-awful noise . . . and then as soon as I replaced it, the power supply fan started rattling. Not sure what the heck that was about, but I found a 450 watt PS for about $28 with tax and shipping. Put that in and everything's fine.

For the time being.

Of course, you get what you pay for - it's a fairly noisy PS.

*starts to get nervous* :speechless:
Yeah, I'm 99.9% sure that's it. If it doesn't power on at all (from what Pac described), It's definitly a bad power supply.

480 watts is Excellent!
I had to pay $100 at Staples (it was an emergency.. On a Sunday evening) for a 500 watt power supply back before I went to Mexico in December  :grr:

Good Luck with that!

Don't be nervous. I won't, like, be MAD at you personally or anything if it's something else. Nearly 100% of the research I've done basically says the same thing you do. There's also what little I know, and the supply was immediatly suspect the minute it didn't turn on. So if that's not what it is, then a bunch of folks are wrong, including myself.

I was mostly griping because I'm one of those unfortunate people who tend to jinx machines. Automatic doors don't open for me, vending machines have never worked for me, price scanners malfunction when I'm near them, etc. I wish I had a nickel for everytime a repair person has told me he/she has never heard of the issue I'm having with a broken machine and been genuinely surprised about it. Needless to say, it's been my experience that simple problems with computers turn into huge ones no one has ever heard of before.

 :D :D That's Interesting!
Well, within the last 3 months, I've had to rebuild 3 out of 6 of my computers.. Each was no less than $700.00
So You're Lucky...

WAIT! What am I doing discussing this with you?! You could Jinx Me Too! :scared:
;)

Tyrant

I've never been able to pass my jinxes on to other people unless I live with them, so I think you're safe.  :D  Your computer issues are probably completely independant of the fact that we're on the same board.

  I hope.  :speechless:

In the past ten years, my parents are on their second dishwasher, second clothes drying and third clothes washer.

I believe that some folks just have bad body electricity and should remain Ahmish.

This is why I build my own computers so when something goes wrong I only have myself to blame, so I try and get it right the first time. My latest flub was accidentally unplugging my video card's power cord when I was trying to format my computer. Got a bit of a garbled static signal on my screen and then realized what happened plugged it back in. After getting windows installed back onto the computer the screen had green dots on it and when I played games it had dots popping up on my screen sporadically and textures to buildings when be on wrong buildings and sticking out at weird angles. Soooo I had to buy a new card which bummed me out since I paid $250 for the one I messed up a little over a year ago. If anything it keeps me on my toes and more vigilant to everything when I'm building a computer, which is nice since I build computers for friends and co-workers on occasion. I just bought myself this RAM and this motherboard and I'm holding out until next week to see how much of a difference there's going to be between the Q9450 and Q6600 quad-core processors. If any of you are looking to modify or upgrade your computer I'd recommend http://www.newegg.com for most parts and I just found the site http://www.frozencpu.com which is pretty nice for modifying your case and keeping everything on the cooler side for your computer parts.

RVR II

Agreed! Building your own if you can do it is The Best way to go, for those reasons you stated.

That FrozenCPU.com site Looks Awsome!
I love moding my existing computers. All six have some sort of flashiness to them..
I'll be checking This Site for future mods for sure! :o
