Personally, I can attribute any of that to bad filmmaking, and the fact that many people who like the films never bother to read the book ("You actually want me to READ? WORDS? NO! Please! God! Anything but that!") - when I read the book, I never interpreted Sam, Frodo, or Legolas as being gay, or believed that the characters were smoking pot. Which is why I don't like the films, because they misrepresent Tolkien's writing to a great degree. I think the reason that the films would make good RiffTrax material is because they're so far removed from the original source material that it's easier to riff on them, because, this, way, it's not like you're riffing on Tolkien, you're riffing on some film.
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

I don't think you can really blame the films for the homosexual misinterpretations so much as the adolescence of the viewers. (And a lot on Sean Astin's performance.) As for the pipeweed, who's to say Old Toby doesn't have a little THC in it?

Minnesota

kind of ironic that you mention it Isaac, I got this email from my college yesterday.

"English majors/minors and others interested:  Here's the description of the
Tolkien course I promised a few minutes ago.

Since the publication of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R.
Tolkien's work has been revised, reinterpreted and rewritten in a staggering
variety of media.  In cartoons, movies, comic books, board games and
computer games, Tolkien?s characters, motifs, and stories continue to
resurface in contemporary popular culture.   By examining the way that
popular culture has appropriated Tolkien's work, this course will attempt to
come to a larger understanding of popular culture and the representations it
produces."

...scary- a class full of "Isaacs"  ;D

not to mention the marijuana jokes

Why does everyone assume "pipeweed" is marijuana? Oh right. PIPE WEED.  ::) And all the giggling Merry and Pippin do after the Ents flood Isengard.

Yeah, the Shire is basically a fictionalized Amsterdam, what with all the pipeweed and underage drinking and fireworks,
not to mention the "Red-Candle Districts". ;D

I'm pretty sure I heard Dark Side Of The Moon playing in the pub.

Doesn't sound like it's been brought up yet, but I'm wondering what is meant by "this very special two-part RiffTrax".  Are they going to be sold at different times?  Or does that just mean we'll have to sync it up twice?

EDIT:  Apparently I didn't look hard enough, sorry.

You will have to sync it up twice. There is a new disc out that requires a flip of the disc to finish watching.

Yes it's going to come as two MP3s.  There will be instructions at the end/beginning of the first/second MP3 to tell you what to do, either flip the disc over or go to a certain chapter and pause and wait for a cue.  It's alot easier than it sounds, it's pretty much just starting over halfway thru.  Two MP3s should help make downloads more manageable for people.

Will there also be a single MP3 version. I have the one-sided edition, and would hate to have to resync halfway through.

MrTorso

Looking at Conor's post it will only be two mp3s You will have to re-sync at a certain chapter on the non-flipper versions.

Extra syncing will be fine, just as long as I don't have to pay anything over 5 bux for it.  May the force be... oh wait, wrong film.  *shakes head*  My fault, sorry.

Gotta remember to borrow my mom's copy of the movie to watch it with, by the way.

Hank

I don't think that it should cost any more than any of the higher tiered Trax ($2.99). It's still just a single movie, only a tad longer than The Matrix and SW: The Phantom Menace.

SecretAgentSuperDragon

It won't be. In the catalog area, it lists it as $2.99, so no worries. ;)

Alright, I gotta come out with it.

I was one of those people that stood outside the movie theater in the bitter cold at midnight in Hobbit clothes. I was obsessed with LotR, including both Tolkien and Jackson's work. I loved every second of all three movies, including the extended. I bawled my eyes out for Return of the King, both when reading it and seeing the movie.

And I am thoroughly going to enjoy this riff.

Why, you may ask? Why, when I love these movies to death and beyond?

BECAUSE I HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR. I am able to see the humor in everything, and I think it's fantastic that Mike and Kevin are riffing this movie. Even if they tear it to pieces, I will still find it funny. There is humor in everything, even if it's on something that you breathed for years on end. I laughed at gay Hobbit jokes from Clerks 2, and I'll laugh when Mike and Kevin make them, too. (Which they probably will)

There is humor in everything. Lighten up and see it, and you're life will be much better for it.

Riff on, Mike and Kevin. Riff on.

Randal: "Those f*cking Hobbit movies were boring as hell. All it was was a bunch of people walking - three movies of people walking to a f*cking volcano."

That pissed me off and made me laugh at the same time. I shouldn't mind, because Randal's pretty much an idiot most of the time, but it still wounded my fanboy pride. I hope that's not what Kevin thinks - I usually respect his opinion on movie stuff. Maybe he'll talk it about it in that new Another Evening DVD.

Kevin Smith said the exact same thing during "The Tonight Show," so, yeah, I think it's safe to assume that he doesn't like the Lord of the Rings films.
