QuoteVariety has confirmed that Matt Reeves is in early talks with Paramount to direct a "Cloverfield" sequel, and he has also made a deal with GreeneStreet Films to direct "The Invisible Woman."

Timing of the projects will depend on how quickly Paramount can complete discussions with Reeves, producer JJ Abrams and scribe Drew Goddard to scare up another monster tale for the "Cloverfield" sequel. There's a good chance the sequel will be Reeves' next film, in which case he will direct "The Invisible Woman" afterward.

"Woman" is a Hitchcock-style thriller that probes the mind of a former beauty queen who turns to a life of crime to protect her family. Reeves wrote the script and will produce with Abrams. "Matt has created a truly original and compelling character and story," said GreeneStreet's John Penotti.

With a $25 million budget, a strong concept and cast of unknowns, "Cloverfield" scored a $46 million opening, which was a record for a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Paramount gave away almost no first-dollar gross, making the film a bargain for the studio.

Oh man - is this a joke? I mean - I liked the movie, but a sequel? Way to go Writers Strike!

I was thinking of what they could do for a sequel the other day, actually. I was thinking that they could use the same timeline, just a different perspective - like a troop of soldiers or some form of the military. That way they could give you more info about what the monster is and where it came from.

If they do a sequel, it should be a documentary gone wrong conducted by American reps in Japan - regarding the "secret Slusho ingredient."

And if they do a sequel, they need to turn the steadicam on.

This is exactly what the director said a sequel would be.  I'll try to dig up the quote somewhere...

I second the steadicam. While I wasn't bothered by it as much as my wife (maybe because of all the FPS playing I've done), it would be a bit of a stretch to think that more than one group of people would run around with an invincible camcorder while a monster terrorized the city.

And wow . . . Who knew that I could actually come up with the same idea the director did?

Really?  I think there would be a lot of people doing that, think of all the millions of people in New York....at least a handful of them would carry their camcorders around.

Here ya go.

CS: Any possibilities for a "Cloverfield" sequel?

Reeves: This was so fun 'cause we'd never done anything like it, and I think we'd want to find a similar challenge, to find a way to have its roots in this but be fresh and new, otherwise you're just repeating yourself. There's a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that's been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy's briefly filming him. In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another. That idea sort of tickled me. We'll have to see if anyone would want a sequel. If the movie does well and we find a compelling reason to do so then it would be fun to do a sequel.

Doctor Who?

While I haven't seen this movie(Shaky-cam gives me a headache)it seems like an interesting idea.

It's also nice to see a movie that cost less then $100 million do well.

Can anyone tell me how bad the shaky cam is?

I can watch NYPD Blue and the BSG with out getting a headache, but the Bourne movies give me one every time.

Which one is Cloverfield closer to.

Thanks.

It's more like Bourne.  If you've seen Blair Witch, it's even closer to that.

Yeah, the best comparison is Blair Witch. Just imagine what it'd be like to try and film with a camcorder while running away from the scary thing and you'll get the idea.

I dunno - the shaky cam  makes things feel more "real" sure - but I know tons of people who would never sacrifice the discernability of what they're filming lol. I mean - there's no point in filming if the people watching won't know what it is anyway =P

Let it be known, if I were being chased by a gigantic spider-monster, I'd hold the camera as steady as possible before exploding =)

Well then I think i will rent Blair Witch and if that goes well I will give Cloverfield a try.

Thanks for your help.

Speaking of exploding . . .

My only problem with the perspective they took with Cloverfield is that it's one of those movies that doesn't really stand up to multiple viewings. Once you know what will happen, I wouldn't imagine it'd be as good the second time around. Which is why you need a sequel with another perspective. Let's hope they stay with a good story instead of just throwing a bunch of money at it.

Zardoz!

How about "Cloverfield 2: The explanation".
Everyone who believes in justice, racial equality and free speech should support Duane "the Dog" Chapman and boycott anyone who takes action against him.
