QuoteSarah Michelle Gellar told Sci Fi Wire that she's still passionate about developing "Alice," a movie based on the computer game "American McGee's Alice," to which she owns the film rights. The game is based on Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."

"It's a passion project of mine," Gellar said in an interview. "It's a story that I'd love to see. I'm fearful at this rate that I'm going to be the wicked Queen of Hearts because I'm going to be too old to be Alice," she added with a laugh.

The Rogue Entertainment game is a first-person-shooter based in a dystopic dark version of Carroll's Wonderland. Gellar said she mastered the game with the help of her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., who is an avid gamer. "I just thought [it] was the most weirdly beautiful game," Gellar said.

She added: "I finished it, which was a miracle. I had a lot of help. We got the rights to it, and Universal wound up getting really excited and put a lot of money into it, and then it's the usual story. There was a regime change."

But Gellar said that she hasn't given up on developing the game as a movie. "It's still my project, and I'm still working diligently. So to all those Alice fans, I'm not giving up. Because I believe there is such a beautiful, crazy, cool, twisted story to be told there."

Calling the movie "the frustration of my life," Gellar joked: "I'll do it if I have to get down and write it myself one of these days, I may have to."

Pak-Man

An actress writing the script to a movie based on a video game that's nearly 10 years old? What could go wrong? :^)

Seriously, this has potential, (I love the atmosphere created in McGee's Alice, and I"ve always dug Alice in Wonderland) but it would be SOOO easy to botch it.

The game had a great concept and amazing art design, but the gameplay itself was rather boring.

It's a good idea for a movie, but Ms. Gellar is going to need a top-shelf director to make it any good.
I thought I was Dale.

I like her intiative, and I agree that there's much that can be done in the way of a movie with that game.

Ditto. The atmosphere of the game was neat and the potential is there for a movie version, but I just don't ever see Hollywood getting it right.

Well, it would be difficult to do worse than the Japanese when they made an anime that turned the entire Alice premise into an idiotic magical girls / harem series. By comparison, the Hollywood movie, should it be made, and even predictably botched, should at least be watchable.

I don't know I don't think many people would botch their "passion project", but then again, the director of saw 2' passion project is Repo the genetic opera, and that stars Paris Hilton, so I don't know.

Chaos

I look forward to this being riffed in 15 years when it finally gets made, and ruined. ;)

This just in: Uwe Boll signed to direct.   :scared:

I don't know how Sarah Michelle Gellar is allowed to own shoes, let alone the film rights to something.

izatright

I HOPE they don't let her anywhere near a script.  I'd be okay with her as a lead, even though she really can't act.  The only movie I think she did okay in was The Grudge.  (Why couldn't Mila Jovavich have stuck with this project?!?)  Anyway, I want this movie.  It can't be any worse than any of the AVP and I, guiltily, liked those.

sarcasm_made_Easy

any thing to do with alice (the real alice not the video game) is fine by me.

uh quite obvious from my banner anyways.

mrbasehart

Well, she's got a script-writer/director on her mobile phone list that's pretty good at writing female characters...
