Here's what the info club FAQ says:

Q: Just what IS a hamdinger?
A: Hamdingers (a pivotal plot element in the story of Joel's escape in episode 512- Mitchell and mentioned again in episode 513- The Brain That Wouldn't Die) are reportedly miniature microwavable (and very nasty-tasting) sandwiches made out of processed ham...sort of spamburgers. It was reported that they were a product of the Swift-Premium company, but a search of their web site turns up no such product.

Yes, yes, this is the same song and dance provided by Wikipedia.  I still say Denny's.

This is why I was hoping Mike Nelson could help settle this debate once and for all.  He was there when they wrote the joke, he would be able to tell us what they meant when they referred to "Hamdingers".

Hamdingers sounds like something every mom from Minnesota makes for her children.

Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Here's the official word as confirmed by both Mike and Kevin:

A hamdinger is a deviled ham patty, made by the company Swift-Premium, which were sold by the block. You can find them in sandwiches or on buns, etc., but the pattie and two pieces of bread do not a hamdinger make. It's just the patty.

Oddly enough the mst3kinfo.com FAQ has the "sandwich" definition, but according to the guys, that is incorrect.

You're welcome!

torgosPizza delivers -- again.  Thanks for your efforts.

Me, I'm still looking into obtaining the Jimmy Dean pancake-wrapped-around-a-sausage-on-a-stick, as pictured on these very boards.  Sara Lee kindly informed me of their availability in my location.  Sara Lee and Jimmy Dean... I wonder about their relationship.  Nobody doesn't like Sara, and I just hope Jimmy can deal with her popularity.

Well, whaddaya know?

I wonder if the Denny's item was so named because it contained the actual Swift-Premium product, or whether two independent corporate entities simultaneously came up with the word "hamdinger."  That's a scary thought.

Actually, it must be the latter; I'm pretty sure the Denny's hamdinger wasn't deviled, pressed, formed, spindled, or mutilated.  I don't remember much about the Hamdinger Slam, but I do remember that it was edible, whereas deviled ham is most definitely not.

Thanks for clearing that up, pizza man.  I'll sleep easier tonight, and dream peacefully of pork products and Beelzebub.

Hey, thanks for going straight to the source of the original reference!  It is funny that even the MST3K FAQ has it a bit wrong.  Now the record is set straight once and for all!

Huzzah!   ;D
