I have a friend who works on Carthaginian Tophet-sites, and he did agree that it seems like there were child sacrifices which happened periodically.

Awesome!  Now, who wants to go burn some toddlers?
only if they're being bad

I feel like there are probably many pictures of such things on rotten.com.  I for one don't think I'll be checking.   :gouge:

Absolutely the general consensus is that it was genuine child sacrifice not just a sort of blood libel made up by the Romans.

Fuzzy Necromancer

Anyway, the Romans kicked out babies they didn't like the look of. Main difference is that the Carthiginians didn't waste their discarded babies, and the Roman method leaves things open for a dues ex machina, hero with mysterious origins type deal.

Are you sure? My history textbook told me they mainly abandoned them somewhere in the deep woods.

I was told that in the Roman culture, the baby was laid at the feet of paterfamilias, and if he accepted the child, he picked it up.  If not, he walked away, and the child was killed.

You know, you still haven't explained your militancy on this point...

Partly it's the incongruity of bursting into song and dance in the middle of a story, but mostly I just hate the style and lyrics of musical numbers.  They creep me out and remind me of the "drama kids" in high school.

Fair enough. If it makes you feel any better, one of the conceits of Enchanted is that it points out such incongruity, even as it's doing it.

Anyway, back on topic, here are some of the REAL reasons Catholics are boycotting the movie.
hahahahaha

Yeah, it's always good fun when people assume Mel Gibson stands for every single Catholic, everywhere.

(A festive CYO party with crepe paper streamers, contestants for the broom dance, the , baked goods, & FATHER RILEY making sure the lights don't go down too low...)

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
With a tiny little mustache

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
Do you know how they go?

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
In the Rectory Basement
Father Riley's a fairy
But it don't bother Mary

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
At the CYO

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
Do you know how they go?

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
There can be no replacement
How do they go,
After the show?

JOE:
All the way
That's the way they go
Every day
And none of their mamas ever seem to know
Hip-Hip-Hooray
For all the class they show
There's nothing like a Catholic Girl
At the CYO
When they learn to blow...

FATHER RILEY:
They're learning to blow
All the Catholic Boys!

MARY:
Warren Cuccurullo...

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Boys!

MARY:
Kinda young, kinda WOW!

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Boys!

MARY:
Vinnie Colaiuta...

CHORUS:
Where are they now?
Did they all take The Vow?

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

WARREN:
Carmenita Scarfone!

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

OFFICER BUTZIS:
Hey! She gave me VD!

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls!

WARREN:
Toni Carbone!

CHORUS:
With a tongue like a cow
She could make you go WOW!

JOE:
VD vowdy vootie
Right away
That's the way they go
Every day
Whenever their mamas take them to a show
Matinee
Pass the popcorn please
There's nothing like a Catholic Girl
With her hand in the box
When she's on her knees

FATHER RILEY:
She was on her knees,
My little Catholic Girl

CHORUS:
In a little white dress

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
They never confess

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
I got one for a cousin
I love how they go
So send me a dozen

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
OOOOOOH!

FATHER RILEY:
Catholic Girls

CHORUS:
OOOOOOH!
(etc.)

DISCLAIMER:  The lyrics above are those of Frank Zappa and do not reflect the views of BBQ Platypus, nor do they implied to necessarily reflect the views (or prior experiences) of anyone on this forum.  Believe me, as much as I often would like to, I do NOT know how they go.  These lyrics were quoted for the sole purpose of providing a nerdy quote.

Every religion on the planet has sucky people in it.  Nobody's disputing that.  I'm sure you'll find anti-Semitic people in every sect, unfortunately.

I just don't appreciate the implication that I think that way, which I certainly don't-- and I think it's safe to assume that the majority of Catholics, including one Michael J. Nelson and several other posters on this board, also reject that kind of idiocy.  After 16 years of Catholic education, including four in the Notre Dame family, never once in Mass, class, or Sunday school was I ever taught to disrespect Judaism (or, for that matter, any other religion.) I never heard any slurs whatsoever from my parents or those close to me.  None of my many Catholic friends have ever exhibited any anti-Semitic tendencies-- but then again, if they did, they wouldn't be my friends to begin with.

In fact, my grade school once invited a rabbi to lead us in a Passover meal, and every year in Good Friday services we were reminded that it was our sins that put Christ on the cross, not the Jewish leaders.  We even prayed for God's protection on Jewish people (and Protestants, and non-Christians, and atheists).  I can't speak for everybody, but at least in my experience, I was encouraged to honor Jesus' roots.

Sorry, but when somebody calls me an anti-Semite, I tend to want to issue a correction.

I'm pretty sure a few nerds have taken to worshipping Cthulhu and the like in earnest.

Quote from: TripeHoundRedux on December 11, 2007, 04:50:37 PM
Isn't that a bit like rabbits worshiping a fox, a big inter-dimensional all consuming fox?

Not really, the fox'd be smart enough not to be all consuming  ;D

You never eat all the rabbits, because then you'll be out of food and you'll have to find more rabbits.
