I honestly don't understand why Hollywood hasn't done a good, faithful, big budget Illiad.  I mean come on, it's like the most violent thing ever conceived, and no one has taken the task to put it on film.  If you haven't read it, there are only about 3 chapters where something pivotal to the plot really happens, the other 21 books are people getting stabbed through the base of the skull with spears.  Plus you could fairly easily cut the movie down to a reasonable length by cutting out some of the battles.

It's got everything for Hollywood

-ridiculous ultra-violence
-over the top drama of Achilles and anyone he interacts with
-fairly minimal plot, which is entirely in the context of the slaughtering
-women hot enough to go to war for 10 years over or to sit out of the fight over

Remember Troy with Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom? It was pretty much exactly as you described, actually. Pretty bad movie.

Hey! Riff Troy!

what about finnigans wake?

Are you serious?  Finnegan's Wake isn't even really READABLE, much less filmable.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

What they should do for  a real adaptation of the Iliad, and for that matter, the Odyssey, is get Tony Robinson to write one.

Yes, Baldrick from Blackadder, his children's books on Odysseus are fantastic and I'm sure he could make them a little more grown up, he doesn't shy from describing the violence as it is.

I'll be darned. Good old Baldrick! Does he manage to sneak any turnips in there?

No but he also did a great set of shows in the same style on bible stories called Blood and Honey which is also great but I can't find on DVD. :(

Oh and he played Judas brilliantly too (he's a very good actor beyond the Turnips :D)

PlayMSTie

Yeah, he is . . . but I'm still partial to the turnips.  :)

Going back to Finnegans Wake a moment, if we made it could we cast Hillary Swank purely on the basis that her name is perfectly Joycean?

Hey! Riff Troy!

I agree! Seeing Troy was one of the worst movie going experiences I ever had. Brad Pitt made a terrible Achilles.
I am Ambassador Phantom, from the planet Krankor! I am rapidly approaching your planet... in the warship, which you have just seen. I will arrive tomorrow night at precisely eight o'clock. At that time I shall make my wishes known to you. You will obey them... or die! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!

They could take the Tristram Shandy approach and just make a movie about making a movie of Finnegan's Wake.

you got your order wrong.  we just had beowolf so next will be cantebury tales then dantes inferno.

Sigh, non English majors ::) ;)

The next after Beowulf would be Piers Ploughman.

Actually a film of The Canterbury Tales would be great

Tripe, stop making English majors seem like pompous jerks (even though must of us are)

Perhaps, though that's not nearly as important as hiring David Lynch to direct.  If there's anyone on Earth weird enough to be up to the task, it's him.

Cronenberg might be up to the task.  He did adapt The Naked Lunch after all.

Zardoz!

Back on topic, I'm really amazed we never had a whole series of cheap, direct to video "Blob" movies, like they did with the "Hellraiser" series.

I'd expect us to be up to "The blob 10: Red Christmas" by now.

I know I'm a little late in this reply, but you should check out this trailer. I don't know if or when this is going into general release, but I really want to see it.
