Chat Room?

Any chance a chat room could be added to the forum/site?

Would let us chat real time plus you could always try and convince Mike to come on and we could scare him with our uber geeky questions

Aves the Fox had created one a while back...  I think its still live, but we really couldn't get anyone hanging out in there...

It would be much better if there was a chat room thru the site...but that could cause some headaches for J-Proof, Conor, and Torgo...

There are some free web based IRC type server/clients... the Fox did all the research on this... I'm sure that something could be worked out... but I can with certainty it would lead to the board being used less and less.  I'm just worried as to what it would do to the sense of community we already have here, and how accessible would it be to novice users and new comers.

I did have the old IRC chat on my server a while back, but Rufus told me that there was talk of a possible chatroom directly through the riff site, so I kinda bummed the old IRC one out of exsistence...

also, not too long ago, I pitched the idea to J-Proof and Rufus about a possible VRML chat.. though with the DisembAudio game in the works, I'm having to put the VRML project on hold =P

Yeah.  It's hard to really get into the DAP community, where it seems a lot of the conversation goes on in the IRC chats.  Here it's easy, and if you aren't on all the time you can catch up by reading previous posts.

Chat rooms can be really fun, but they're also the biggest time-suck in the history of the world.  We can't have one because I would never get anything done ever again.

But a special live chat every now and then with Mike or Kevin would be delightful.  Any way they'd be amenable to that?

I've ran a web based chat for years that's also accessible from IRC clients.  It's great.  It's not a mst3k chat room but we have had "celebrity" chatters from time to time and you can moderate the chat when they come in so it won't be total and utter chaos.  Although, we did have a celeb who would drop by unannounced from time to time.  He eventually got sick of people pestering him (we had chat room stalkers who would hang out there just in case he dropped by...scary).  Anyway, it can be done.  If the mods want more info on the software/script email me or something.

I remembered reading this thread yesterday and I was just watching a horribly bad movie on TV (Uptown Girls) and it made me think of something.  LONG ago, when mst3k was actually on TV, we would all get together on chat and watch it.  I knew no fans of mst3k in real life so it was fun to make fun of the movie and talk about the show while we were online together.  I'm hopeless and have no life, I admit.

I think that would be fun to do with rifftrax, or even unriffed movies.  You want to see "It's a Wonderful Life" riffed, we could get together and riff it (not as good as the pros, mind you).  We could have "Rifftrax release party" chats or something similar.  Sounds fun to me, even though it would suck your life away.

I think the main thing that helps when getting chatrooms started (and I've been IRC chatting since 95 or so, before it was even cool...again, me=dork) is setting a time and day at first, to get people to get to know each other.  If you just say "chat anytime" it's going to be hard to get people together.   But, "Chat is Thursday at 9:00 pm EST" means people may actually drop by.  Viewing parties and special event "celebrations" help too.  Just my 2 cents!

You know, I think I like you too.  Anyone who calls themselves Fox is cool with me!  My chat nick has always been "vixen" and my icon is normally a fox  I should probably get an icon for here. 

Back to topic, maybe we could set some times or something and try again.
