I'm a first time poster, but I've been an MST3K fan since back during the Comedy Central days. Not the oldest, but old enough :P Anyway, I just wanted to chime in here on a prevailing thought that some seem to have in regards to Joel's new project. A lot think that Joel and the CT gang were waiting for Mike to test the waters and see if this would be a viable market. I would say there is a significant flaw to that reasoning.

CT has the rights now to 12 movies. That sort of thing doesn't happen over night nor on a whim. Even if they are bad movies it had to be costly. Then there's the fact that they probably had to spend a significant amount of time just getting the people together and all on the same page, figuring out what specifically they wanted to do with the movies, then writing the scripts themselves, etc.

No, this project has been in the works for some time now. I would say at LEAST a year, which would put it right around the time when Mike first started Rifftrax here (though I'm not certain of this as I only first came across Rifftrax about 4 or 5 months ago, but it appears that it's a little over a year old. Please feel free to correct me on this if I am way off).

All that aside, I'm very happy to see Joel and the old gang getting back together (though Kevin M. will always be Tom Servo to me as well), and I hope that what ever tensions may exist between Joel and Mike (if any at all) they are resolved. I'd love to see a good, friendly relationship between the two groups.

That's my .02 anyway. :D

I don't think there's active animosity between Mike and Joel, and agree that there's enough room for everybody.

Applying the same logic, Rifftrax didn't drop out of the sky, either.  There was a company to set up, software to test, legalities to check into, etc. I think the timelines are close, though.

Also, for all we know, some or most of CT's movies might be public domain.

Not to mention that The Film Crew dvds, and Mike's Legend stuff predates Rifftrax too.

Not that I'm anti CT, just saying we don't have any facts on who started what when or with what knowledge.

As of a few months ago Trace was "No, no more riffing for me...."

As of 2 days ago they were writing the first one.

So yeah....

Actually, I believe that quote was from last May, but either way it could have been a smoke screen. Also, if the movies were public domain, they would not have had to worry about licensing them. And as to Mike's other projects before Rifftrax, we could keep going back to MST3K if we want to do that, but I believe the argument others were making was in direct relation to Rifftrax, as that has arguably been his biggest (and riskiest) project yet.

Ultimately though, I was simply pointing out that the argument others were making does not hold much water, and my main point is that we have no real idea as to the timelines of either of them. I was simply trying to state that this project did not just start a few days ago, and has probably been in the works at least a year. I love the fact that they are doing this and can't wait for CT to release the first movie!

We all hated it, I wouldn't bother if I was you.

Great! :) I'll let you (and others) test-pilot the program before I spend dime one on it.

I kinda agree with this ... I'll buy the first release but beyond that I'm not committing to anything. I loved the Mary Jo Rifftrax and was an occasional fan back in the Joel days so I'm leaning toward buying every Cinematic but pricing and quality are still factors at this point.

Hi there. By your own logic, you're neglecting the fact that Mike and the gang would have needed time to set up their own idea, as well. RiffTrax was in the works before CT was. Companies and products take time to put together, even if you are not getting a licence to own the rights to the movies. Also remember that the Film Crew project was put together well before RiffTrax as well, and there were several Mike Nelson commentary tracks put together for Legend Films releases of classic movies as well.

I'm not necessarily saying that others were waiting to see Mike "test the waters," I'm just pointing out that your supposed "flaw" in the logic of those who are saying that is, in and of itself, flawed as well. Personally, the only thing that makes me feel uncomfortable about the whole CT thing is that several of them have said in the past that they were done riffing, and they had no interest in it anymore... and now (apparently) suddenly, comparably speaking, they are all back together again and excited about riffing again... that kind of coincidence has the potential to leave some people with a bad taste in their mouths, because of the seeming hypocrisy of the past statements compared against the current behaviour.

I'm still gonna give them a chance (if the price isn't preventative), I'm just saying... call a spade a spade. And in that spirit, leaving Joel and crew aside for a moment, I'd just like to once again say that Jim Mallon is TOTALLY trying to capatalize on the popularity of RiffTrax. :P

Joel did say in the SW interview that he and Frank were putting something together that fell apart before they did CT.  So at least the two of them were hooked up and riffing.

What really gobsmacks me is the addition of Josh.  Man, that really seemed to come out of nowhere, but kudos to Joel for managing to pull together so many of the Brains, no matter how he did it.

SaucyRossy

Whats with people being upset that the some of the CT crew changed their minds about riffing movies? I mean who cares? People have change of hearts all of the time, besides it was probably for the best to deny and shoot down stuff so fans wouldn't get there hopes up.

Also how many of you on here have been BEGGING for Joel, Trace, Frank to come back in some form? Enough with the complaining people! These are good times for us!

Well the fact it is it was probably a natural thing to bring Josh back for this project considering he got Trace the gig at AFHV or whatever its called. And when you think about it....and I don't want to degrade what they were doing but all Josh and Trace were really doing was riffing on bad home made movies.....never really left the whole riffing thing if you want to get technical about it.

Ok, let me try and make this clear. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHEN RIFFTRAX WAS IN THE WORKS! The idea that was being passed around was that Joel was letting Mike test the waters. This can only hold true if work on CT didn't begin until well after Rifftrax got under way and was a success. The development phase of Rifftrax and the previous projects of Mike have nothing to do with it at all. I'm simply saying that work on CT likely started around the same time as when Rifftrax launched, and if that's the case then there was no "waiting for Mike to test the waters" about it. Rifftrax could have been in the works for 10 years and it wouldn't make a difference in the reasoning, the key points are when Rifftrax launched and when work on CT started.

Now I think we can move on from this.
