Files are getting big...

Matrix clocks in at 2:10 and takes up a whopping 91+ megs. I'm concerned with Phantom Menace clocking in at 2:35 that it might be just big enough to jump over the space limits on my measley 120 Meg MP3 player.

Ain't no way I'm waiting longer than 24 hours for Phantom Menace, so I submit this question to those in the know:
Will Phantom Menace make it under the 120 meg mark, or do I need to go IPOD shopping this weekend? :^)

Good question... unfortunately we don't have an EXACT file size yet, but suffice it to say that it could wind up being the only MP3 on your entire player, if that's the limit you are working with.

And besides... 120 megs? I didn't think they made anything that small anymore!

Just kidding, but seriously, you might consider upgrading, simply for the fact that if the next RiffTrax is going to be, say, the Andy Warhol anti-film "Sleep" (and I wouldn't ask that Mike subject himself to that), which has a running time of 321 minutes, the commentary would be a massively large file indeed, even after it's been zipped.

The simple solution is to convert the MP3 to a lower bitrate.

Then you shouldn't have any issues about space since you can control the final size.

That is too too funny ;)

If I lower the bitrate would it desync the lines at all?

kodiakthejuggler

Lowering the bitrate simply lowers the quality.

It does nothing for the duration of the file. It just determines how much information can be passed per second, not the timing.

Another thing you might try is converting the audio in variable bitrate mode.

If you set the high end of the bitrate at like 96kbps, it should compress the silent parts down pretty nicely.

Just for fun, I converted the Matrix Rifftrax just to see how much it would compress down.  The original file is 96kbps constant bitrate and I compressed it down to 96kbps (maximum) variable bit rate, and the file dropped from 90.9 Mb to 54.1 Mb.

I know you are on a Mac, but there may be a Mac equivalent of LAME floating around out there.

For PC users who are just curious, here's the command line I used...

lame --vbr-new -b 96 Matrix_Riff.wav Matrix_Riff_VBR.mp3

PAK-MAN, I'm surprised you're not re-authoring the DVD's?

That would solve your problem too.

Tarantulas

Where would he find time to do that popping pellets and chasing ghosts all day? ;)

also, wok wok wok!

No DVD burner.

Besides. Manual sync is fun. I like to think of myself as the Rifftrax representative of the technologically inept. :^)

The Phantom Menace MP3 file is under 100 megs, so you will be fine.   :-*

You can get a 1 gig MP3 player or a DVD burner for less than $40.
